Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Dunbar.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was an engineering leader for 25 years leading global engineering teams across multiple countries and it was very rewarding. My most rewarding role was as the Chief Technology Officer at GE Healthcare’s maternal-infant care division with the mission to send moms and babies home healthy. My job was going to move us to Wisconsin, so I found a different engineering role and moved to Tennessee instead. My new role was not as rewarding and I was looking for an exit strategy from corporate America.
I joined Burn Boot Camp in Hendersonville, TN as a member and started thinking about being a Franchise owner as I loved the amazing community in the gym and I loved watching people’s lives change physically and even more importantly emotionally. I watch women (and men) do things they never thought possible and become empowered to take charge of their lives.
I ended up buying the Hendersonville location and then recently purchased the Mt Juliet location as well. Both locations have grown over 60% in memberships and counting. I love being a business owner and helping to create energized and empowered teams and members!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My husband and I bought Hendersonville in November of 2019 and my husband ran the day-to-day as I was still working in corporate America. Covid-19 hit in March and that was a huge challenge as gyms were forced to close and move to virtual workouts.
We set up Zoom workouts and were so fortunate that most of our members stuck with it. We only lost 10% of our membership base during that time. I found that Burn Boot Camp was one of the things that kept our members motivated and engaged during such a challenging time for everyone!
As you know, we’re big fans of Burn Boot Camp. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

As a gym designed for busy lifestyles, we offer free Childwatch at every location, personal meetings with trainers, and a universal membership that allows our members to visit any gym without drop-in fees.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
I am passionate about making a positive impact in people’s lives and Burn Boot Camp allows me to do that. We have members at every fitness level and the gym community is about encouraging everyone to do their best and accomplish things they never thought possible. It might be doing a sit-up for the first time after having a C-section or lifting a heavy weight or doing a double under.
Everyone’s goals are different and Burn meets people wherever they are in life. We have an amazing community and strive to make everyone feel welcomed and empowered. Sometimes the heaviest weight is opening the front door to enter the gym for the first time. We strive to make that the best experience possible so the new members feel welcome and do not feel intimidated.
For others, this may be the only thing they do for themselves each day. We offer complimentary child watches so our members can focus on their goals and do something to invest in their health and well-being.
