Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Ramsey, RN.
Hi Rachel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated in May 2005 from the University of TN at Knoxville with a BSN in Nursing. I worked in the hospital setting with moms and babies my entire nursing career, including the labor and delivery unit, lactation, NICU, and well-baby nursery. When a mom has a baby, she is in the hospital 2-3 days then goes home. For many years, as I walked new moms out the hospital doors with their babies, and so many of them seemed anxious to go home. They had just given birth and were now handed a newborn to take home and figure it all out on their own. I realized these moms needed help at home for just a few more days or weeks and needed more support and hands-on care beyond what the hospital offered. I sat down at my computer one day and googled “how to start a business’ and the rest is history. I started my company from the ground up and figured out each step on my own. It was not easy, but my driving force was the passion I have for helping new mothers. My company The Newborn Nurse is now four years old and is staffed by 30 experienced Neonatal RN’s. We help moms at home with their newborns and provide the expertise and support new moms need so badly. We have been honored to care for over 160 Nashville families and are excited to see what the future holds for us!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No!
Starting and owning a business has its incredible, fun and exciting moments for sure, but also definitely has its challenges. I think for me, the weight and responsibility factor of what I do day to day and the job of managing a team of 30 nurses, in addition to caring and making sure our new families are taken care of has been the greatest challenge. Learning self-care and how to balance a business which runs 24/7/365 has been a steep learning curve, but one that I now am getting better at doing. I have learned to add more margin in my personal life so that the train can keep running down the tracks. Also, no one I know has a business like mine, so there aren’t many places I can go to ask for mentorship or guidance. I have had to figure out most of it on my own. As our business has grown, we have (as all businesses do) experienced growing pains, but thankfully have learned to adapt and change accordingly, and it shows in our growth and client satisfaction. We love love love our families and their babies!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Newborn Nurse, LLC, is a business which provides in-home nursing care for new moms and their babies. We provide daytime or overnight (night nursing) care for new families, so moms can rest, recover, and get the support they need. We also provide sleep training for the baby, lactation support, and help with small chores around the house.
We also provide a 2 hour in home Baby 101 Newborn class that goes over newborn education and information and is an amazing class for expectant families!
We are set apart because our team consists of experienced Neonatal Registered Nurses. We all have college degrees and at least three years of hospital professional nursing newborn experience so we are true newborn professional experts.
I am most proud of our team and the incredible support and love they give to our families. We have been honored to care for several celebrity families including Chris Stapleton, Kane Brown, the several of Nashville Predators hockey team including Roman Josi and Pekka Rinne.
We book full and fast. We are currently booked full until September, so the earlier the better when booking with us!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is horseback riding, hands down. I lived at the barn, owned a horse, and my best days were spent bareback riding through creeks and fields with my friends. Also, I am Nashville native with deep family roots here on both sides of my family. Every time I drive up Broadway, I think, one grandad went to Hume Fogg and used to tell me how he would throw water balloons on pedestrians below, and my other grandfather was a Bellman at The Union Station hotel. I’m so proud of my Nashville heritage. I come from a very big family, so any and all family dinners, gatherings, and holidays also make me nostalgic. Growing up, I went to church at Two Rivers Baptist Church across from the Opryland Hotel (it’s now a Catholic church). We would have Easter services at the Grand Ole Opry, then go and eat Easter lunch at the Opryland Hotel. We would get dressed in our Sunday best. It was such a wonderful memory with my entire family and grandparents.
