Hidden Gems: Meet Roger McMurtry of JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger McMurtry

Hi Roger, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling was established in 1959 by Mr. James E. McMurtry. James had been around the trash disposal business all of his life. He started working for his Father, Tom McMurtry, who had a successful trash disposal business in Nashville.

Once James reached his twenties, he decided it was time to branch out with his own trash disposal business with a commitment to provide quality service to the best of his ability. James didn’t focus on being the biggest company to provide trash service, but strived to be the best company to do it. James’ brother, William, came to work for him in the 70s and was a very vital part of growing JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling to what it is today.

Through the years, James hired other family members to be apart of his business including one of his daughter’s, Ms. Tanya McMurtry, after his loving wife passed away in 1998. James also brought on William’s 2 sons, Dale and Roger McMurtry at different times, as well as a couple of William’s grandsons, Michael Breeden Sr & Matthew McMurtry.

James lost his brother, William, in 2014 to a Cardiac Arrest. Through it all, James endured many challenges over the years but kept pushing forward to overcome them all.

James McMurtry passed away in April 2022 but his legacy and his dedication to provide quality service to the communities around Middle TN still lives on with JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling as his daughter, Tanya McMurtry, and his nephew, Roger McMurtry, take the helm to continue to strive to be the best trash disposal and/or recycling service provider there is in Middle TN.

Even though times have changed throughout the years, and JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling has grown in size, there are still a lot of characteristics that continue to keep JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling a small, family owned and operated business. We encourage our employees to share the same dedication and commitment to providing quality service as what James provided that has made JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling what it is today. Our number one goal is to provide quality trash disposal and recycling services for people in our service areas, while maintaining the quality service and dedication that our current customers have come to expect.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All businesses at one time or another face obstacles and challenges. It is no different for JE McMurtry Disposal & Recycling. Instead of focusing on obstacles an challenges that can sometimes derail a business, we instead focus on our mission, which is to provide quality trash disposal and recycling services for people in our service areas, while maintaining the quality service and dedication that our current customers have come to expect. We make that our ultimate goal and we don’t let these obstacles stand in our way. You don’t grow as a person or organization without those obstacles and challenges. Those hard times define who you are and what you are about.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe I covered this already. I chose to focus on the company as a whole instead of just me as I am only one small part of it. I felt like it was essential to be able to paint a very clear picture of our business over the years since the inception of it in 1959. It is more than just a business to us, it’s our name and it is who we are. We take pride in that. The fact is there are several different choices in Middle TN for trash service disposal providers and we pride ourselves on being the best in business.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
