Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Yebuah.
Hi Shannon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my cheerleading career at the age of 5. I cheered for youth leagues and school through high school. I began coaching cheerleading in 2014, with the Nashville Cardinals, and went on to become the Director of Cheerleading with the Shelby Park Jaguars. When the pandemic hit, many football teams did not offer cheerleading for the season. With this in mind, Cheer HIVE was created! I put together a group of educated black women, whom all have cheer backgrounds to form the founding staff for Cheer HIVE. Together we encourage, promote, and teach girls the importance of self-love, discipline, and sisterhood through the sport of cheer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Since the start of Cheer HIVE, God has really been ordering our steps. Although it hasn’t been all smooth, we have continued to progress with each camp. We have learned to plan for the unexpected, and always have a back up plan for everything. I wouldn’t consider anything a struggle, but a lesson that has made us better.
We’ve been impressed with Cheer HIVE Nashville, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cheer HIVE is an eight-week cheer clinic for girls ages 4-12. We focus on fundamental cheer skills and the importance of Honoring the H.I.V.E. through self love, discipline, sisterhood, and spirit of course. We host two semi-annual camps each year in the spring and fall, and each ends with a showcase spotlighting what they’ve learned on their trip through the HIVE.
We are set apart from all other cheer camps because we Honor the H.I.V.E. and promote anti-bully to the Queen Bees. This means we honor:
H. Her=Me: (Self Love)
I. Integrity: (Discipline)
V. Variety: (Sisterhood)
E. ExtraOrdinary: (Spirit)
This practice starts with our coaching staff setting the example to love yourself, show integrity, respect others differences, and to always give it your all! Our Tarhiya’s Truth Queen Bee Award is dedicated to Tarhiya Sledge, a 12-year-old Nashville cheerleader who took her own life due to bullying. We stress the importance of sisterhood and provide an atmosphere that nurtures and develops confidence in the Queen Bees.
I am most proud of the growth Cheer HIVE has had over its first year. We began with a goal of 25 participants, quickly surpassed that goal, and has only been limited due to Covid restrictions. The support from the community is always mad real! We are always so grateful for all the prepost, donations, and each and every Queen Bee that has attended the camp.
What do you need to know about Cheer HIVE? This is only the beginning for us! Our mission is to be an asset to the community, and a quality program that will serve with excellence, integrity, and enthusiasm.
Any big plans?
Growth. Our plan is to reach as many young girls as we can, not only in Nashville but also in the surrounding cities. No major changes, we will stay and cheer camp and continue to build on the foundation we have started.
