Hidden Gems: Meet Teresa Porter of Tennessee Back Pain Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Porter.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I went to college to pursue biomedical engineering. During that time, I worked to improve the longevity of hip implants. Even with the best medicine and materials available, hip implants are not a long-term solution and are only likely to last 10–20 years. It was during this research that I concluded the best way to improve the longevity of hip implants is to delay them as much as possible. With that realization, I changed career paths and went into holistic healthcare. I wanted to help prevent people from needing surgery whenever possible. I pursued my doctorate at Logan University in chiropractic, with a focus on sports medicine, injury prevention, and hands-on care of the entire musculoskeletal system.

Pretty soon after graduating, I started Tennessee Back Pain Center with my husband. We wanted to provide affordable yet high-quality musculoskeletal care. We wanted to truly address the root cause of a patient’s problems and provide practical, attainable solutions. We are much different from your typical chiropractor. We listen, we care, and we perform thorough assessments. We also combine muscle work (dry needling, cupping, scraping, and trigger point therapy) with chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitative exercises to provide patients with the greatest benefit possible.

Through Tennessee Back Pain Center, I have helped individuals overcome pain, improve their quality of life, and, in some cases, prevent surgery.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Humans are incredible. The body is intricate and complex, which also means that people are not always easy to treat. Most of the time, patients respond very well to care. However, there have been cases that truly stump us, and that has been one of the hardest parts of this field.

Sometimes, what initially appears to be a straightforward musculoskeletal issue turns out to be something much more complex, such as psoriatic arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer. These systemic conditions are not always obvious in the beginning. Often, they are hidden within subtle details that only become apparent when a patient does not improve with a trial of care. That can be frustrating and discouraging for both the patient and the doctor.

One of the most challenging parts of being a chiropractor is accepting that we cannot “fix” every person or every condition. Sometimes our role is not only to provide treatment, but also to recognize when something deeper may be occurring and help guide patients toward the care they truly need. I wish I were a miracle worker who could cure everyone, but I can’t. What I can do is listen carefully, assess thoroughly, continue learning, and do everything possible to help each patient improve their quality of life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Tennessee Back Pain Center?
Tennessee Back Pain Center is a family-owned, Christian-based chiropractic office. We are very different from most chiropractic offices because we care more about how you move and feel than simply “cracking” you from head to toe. Our goal is to find the why behind your pain and equip you with the tools and exercises needed to keep you moving and feeling better long-term. We want to help get you out of pain and back to doing the things you love.

At Tennessee Back Pain Center, we combine multiple techniques into one visit. These may include chiropractic adjustments, dry needling, scraping, cupping, trigger point therapy, movement screens, and rehabilitative exercises. Your musculoskeletal system includes muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerves. Instead of focusing only on joint adjustments, we aim to address and support every aspect of the musculoskeletal system. Research also shows that combining chiropractic adjustments with muscle work and rehabilitative exercises often produces better outcomes than adjustments alone.

We believe that patient education is just as important as treatment. Our goal is not only to help you feel better in the office, but also to help you understand your body, prevent future injuries, and stay active outside the clinic. Every patient is different, which is why we take the time to listen, assess thoroughly, and create individualized treatment plans based on your specific needs and goals.

We also accept most major medical insurance plans, including Aetna, Ambetter, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Medicare, United Healthcare, and more. We want to make high-quality care both accessible and affordable without compromising the level of treatment we provide.

If you or someone you know is struggling with back pain, hip pain, knee pain, ankle pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, elbow pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, foot pain, hand pain, jaw dysfunction, or other musculoskeletal issues, please give us a call. We would love the opportunity to help you feel and move your best.

What’s next?
Our plans for the future are to continue growing. We are currently working toward building a new and larger space to better serve our community. With this expansion, we hope to add a massage therapist, a functional medicine practitioner, and more chiropractors to our team. Our goal is to provide a more comprehensive approach to healthcare while continuing to focus on conservative, patient-centered care.

As Tennessee Back Pain Center grows, we also hope to expand our ability to educate patients on injury prevention, movement, rehabilitation, and long-term wellness. We want to continue creating an environment where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their healing process. By expanding our services and team, we hope to reach more people in Murfreesboro and help individuals and families improve their quality of life without immediately resorting to medications or surgery.
