Hidden Gems: Meet Todd Haylett of Denims Barbecue of Spring Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Haylett.

Hi Todd, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
One of the main reasons my wife and I started Denims Barbecue was the difficulty we had finding good home style cooked meals that could be picked up in a hurry. We had three daughters and we were always on the go to cheerleading practice, basketball games, sleepovers, or something, and we got tired of the traditional corporate cooking options. We thought it would be great if we could quickly pick up a family meal that was prepared from scratch in a real kitchen.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running any business has its challenges…especially a restaurant! Probably navigating the Covid days and dealing with the significant increase in food costs since then has been the toughest challenge.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What we’re all about is in our name. There’s nothing more American than enjoying great barbecue in a comfortable pair of denim jeans. I think all Americans have worked hard or played hard in denim jeans at one point or another and that’s what we do at Denims Barbecue. Our pulled pork is smoked for several hours over real hickory wood charcoal and then a vinegar marinade is added that makes it super juicy and flavorful. We offer the traditional pork plates, sandwich combo platters, and several homestyle side dishes, but our best seller is the giant loaded baked potato. We start with a giant potato big enough to cover two meals and then pile it high with butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, pulled pork or turkey, and garnish with bacon bits & diced green onions. Our plates and sandwich combos feature made-from-scratch cheesy potatoes, baked beans, and several others. We also offer unique side favorites like sweet potato fries, onion rings, and fried pickles that are difficult to find anywhere else. Everything is prepared in a fast casual atmosphere so it’s easy to grab on the go or enjoy the patio lighting in our dining room.

We are also very popular with the church community as we offer a 10% discount to all customers who bring in their Sunday church service program after church for lunch or dinner.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I don’t even know where to start. There’s so many things I wish I knew when I started, but I think the key thing to understand is that there will always be setbacks and hurdles to overcome along the way. You just have to view each setback as a learning opportunity that can be used to make the overall process or customer experience better. If the overall customer feedback is positive, you know you’re on the right track!
