Inspiring Conversations with Andy Atkins of Bad Luck Burger Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Atkins.

Andy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Bad Luck Burger Club was born out of the bad luck of the 2020 pandemic. I had a career change due to the sudden halt put on the music industry because of Covid-19. Cody (Driggers) and I both happened to get flattop griddles around the same time and were playing around with making burgers individually. We got together and crafted what we believe to be a really good, simple burger.

Our family and friends starting requesting the burgers all the time and before you know it, we’re cooking burgers every week for our friends. Both of us have always thought it’d be fun to get into the food industry as neither of us has any service industry experience. So after a lot of R&D on the burger and throwing a couple of practice services for all of our friends, we started booking pop-up services around town at local bars and breweries.

Cody and I both have other jobs that take priority at the moment but the burger club has now been in business for three months and we have done right at about 25 services. The crowds keep growing and the demand is getting stronger. We hope to be able to devote more of our time to it in the future and scale it to something long-term with real growth.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, so far it has been fairly smooth being that we had no prior experience in this industry. We have kept our overhead low as well as our expectations. We have been really surprised at the support that we have garnered in our short time as a business so far. I’m sure we’ll run into our fair share of struggles as we grow the business. Ask us again in six months to a year and I bet we’ll have some stories to tell.

As you know, we’re big fans of Bad Luck Burger Club. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bad Luck Burger Club is a super-secret smash burger pop-up in Nashville, TN. We serve up delicious double cheeseburgers and throw parties in parking lots all over town. We are just trying to feed our community great food and provide them with a positive and inclusive environment. We are really proud of the culture we are cultivating at our pop-up events and happy to see the smiles on people’s faces when they bite into our burgers for the first time!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Cody and I are both fans of the Bon Appetit and First We Feast channels on youtube. We have learned a lot about food and culinary arts from the internet. Of course, we love The Burger Show!
