Inspiring Conversations with Ashley Hastings of Pups Plants + Goods

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Hastings.

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When my now husband, Brandon and I met, we quickly connected over our love of plants. I (Ashley) had quite the collection started and Brandon had a bunch of his own. After a while, we noticed that Brandon’s huge agave Americana rightfully named “Bertha” had babies in her pot. I remember that night we stayed up late watching YouTube videos on how to safely remove her babies from her pot and get them started on their own. We found out these little guys were called “pups”. Aloe, agave, and other like species reproduce by making these offshoots. We chatted about the possibilities of monetizing our hobbies (including my thrifting obsession) and quickly landed on the name “Pups Plants + Goods”. We started selling in a local antique mall in February of 2019 which proved to be very successful. So successful in fact, that we soon after scored a booth at another antique mall, Miss Lucille’s Marketplace. For about a year, we held onto both booths until committing fully to Miss Lucille’s. In the meantime, we decided to go mobile! We purchased a twenty-foot 1978 Shasta camper at the end of 2019 and spent nine months renovating it into a mobile shop for pop-ups. We debuted her July 2020. Today we have expanded our Miss Lucille’s booth, continue to pop-up in our mobile shop, and are carefully searching for the perfect brick and mortar. We love bringing joy to our community through houseplants and purposefully picked secondhand goods and we cannot wait to continue to grow!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have been really fortunate to not have dealt with huge roadblocks so far. Of course, dealing with a pandemic was not easy to navigate but thankfully for us plants make great distractions!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in hardy houseplants and purposefully picked secondhand goods. We want you to have the right houseplant for your environment and the tools to keep it thriving! We have recently added QR codes to each plant label- upon scanning, you are directed to our plant care page on our website. You simply find the name of your plant and boom! There is how to keep it alive.

A lot of people don’t know this- but we do offer plant consulting, meaning- one on one services helping you either decide what plants are right for your space, trouble-shooting sickly plants, re-potting large plants, custom moss poles, and even commercial installs.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Surprisingly a lot of people think the “pups” in pups plants + Goods is for our dogs! While we love our puppies- they aren’t our spokespeople.
