Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Collins owner of Trinity Fitness Studio and NASM Certified Personal Trainer.
Hi Bill, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My journey to being a successful personal trainer and owning a training studio certainly has its share of twists, turns, detours, and roadblocks. Thinking back on it now, that journey is the exact path I needed to take and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I guess you could say that I had a passion for fitness and for helping others even back in high school but never imagined a career as a trainer or studio owner.
My first attempt was over 10 years ago when I was working for a healthcare company and realized that even though we were helping people, we were really only treating patients, not preventing them from becoming patients.
That’s when I started looking for a way that I could help people live a more fit and healthy life so they wouldn’t become to rely on medication or worse yet, never live to see their grandchildren.
So, in early 2012, I spoke with a friend of mine who was a certified trainer and had just opened up his own gym. I started studying to become certified, started shadowing my friend during his client sessions, and started working on my own fitness goals and shedding the extra 20 lbs I was carrying around after years of sitting behind a desk. And, then I became a successful trainer with my own studio. Yeah, that’s totally a lie and truthfully, my journey was just starting.
I spent the next 9 years training a few clients part-time while working a full-time job. Sprinkle that with a few failed attempts at trying to be a full-time trainer and add in a three-year period where I was basically homeless, sleeping on my best friend’s couch, and walking to a job as a grocery clerk at the local Publix. Yes, I was living the dream!
So what changed you may ask? How did Bill Collins Training and Trinity Fitness come about? Short answer; God’s grace, restoration, and blessings! Long answer: I’m still working on that. But, it really comes down to “Not giving up and trusting the process” It’s what I tell my clients all the time and try to encourage them to be passionately consistent. We’ve been open for a little over 5 months now and it’s all still a bit surreal.
I am still in awe daily when I walk through the doors of our studio and so grateful for my wonderful wife and her unwavering support and all she does behind the scenes, grateful for my client’s who put their trust in me each day to help them reach their fitness goals, grateful for the Trinity Fitness family of trainers and instructors who bring their amazing passion, knowledge, and energy to the studio and their commitment to transforming lives, and grateful for this community for welcoming us and for their continued support.
We love being a part of this community and hope that we can be a part of this thriving downtown area for many more years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned, this path has been anything but smooth but every twist, turn, detour, and roadblock has ultimately led me to where I am today. The struggles have made me a better man, trainer, and business owner.
It reminds me of the quote by Denis Waitley – “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is a delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.”
As you know, we’re big fans of Trinity Fitness Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a private boutique studio located in beautiful downtown Columbia.
We offer private personal training by appointment only along with small group fitness classes. We have over 12 certified trainers and instructors who are passionate about fitness and health and even more passionate about serving this community. Our studio looks nothing like your typical gym and is non-intimidating.
We have spectacular views of the downtown area, a clean spa-like environment, and all the equipment needed to help you reach your health and fitness goals.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The fitness industry is one of the fasted growing industries in the world and will continue to grow over the next 5-10 years.
Our niche, the boutique studios will continue to see growth even as online platforms have become increasingly popular due to the pandemic. The reason, is boutique studios offer people that sense of community and personalized service that you don’t get with online platforms or even bog box gyms.
We should continue to see growth as more and more potential clients seek out more private community-based studios.
