Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Kee.
Hi Brent, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I had no intention of ever being a photographer. To be honest, I never considered myself an artist or someone who would ever love working in any kind of art form. I purchased a “nice” camera when my son was born in 2012 because my wife and I agreed that we wanted to have good-quality photographs of our children. From there, I became quite literally obsessed with photography and the editing process.
Things started slowly, and I began taking family portraits for friends’ holiday cards. After a year or two, I decided to turn my hobby into a business. I’ve been in love with photography and the client process since then. In early 2021, I accidentally stumbled upon a niche of close-up personality portraits of kids, and they have been a huge hit with parents! Since then, I’ve rebranded to Fun Sized Photo Co. to focus on this niche that I love so much!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The photography journey has not always been an easy one. Like most photographers, burnout is a real thing.
Especially around the holidays. I was working another full-time job, doing photography sessions in the afternoon, and editing late into the evening to provide a quick turnaround to clients. There were a couple of times when I overextended myself and felt like a zombie during October and November. The nice thing about the busy photography season is that it’s almost always followed by a nice January/February lull when the really cold weather sets in.
2020 and COVID lockdown was also a rough time for me, and most photographers. With social distancing restrictions and people’s general feelings about being around other people, things were very slow. I did get to perform some long-distance porch and outdoor photography sessions, and those stretched my abilities a little bit. But I was a happy boy when things finally went back to “normal”.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fun Sized Photo Co. specializes in studio portrait photography of children. My photography is unique in that it captures lots of the little details and personality quirks that parents love to preserve. Solemn looks, silly faces, and intricate facial details are the things I try to capture. I feel like these things set me apart from most photographers, who are usually just trying to get the perfect smile.
I currently offer these sessions in Nashville and the Tampa Bay area a few times per year, but I’m hoping to start scheduling them in other states in the next year! Sessions with me are FUN. I pride myself on being able to connect with children, and I even think I’m probably better with kids than I am with most adults.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important thing I’ve learned during my photography journey is that client connection and directing are what get great results.
I feel as though I rarely consider the technical aspects of photography, because I know I can get great results if my clients are engaged in the process.
