Inspiring Conversations with Carter Hatfield of Visionary Concrete Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Hatfield.

Carter, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started working in concrete at sixteen, helping my uncle with his pool business. After falling behind in school from moving so much during my early high school years, I dropped out and went to work full time. With my uncle, I learned gunite pools, decorative concrete, shop pads, and general flatwork, gaining hands-on experience that shaped my work ethic and skill set until I was nineteen.

At nineteen, my cousin and I decided to join the military together. We both took the ASVAB and met with recruiters, but he was ultimately denied clearance due to a medical screening. I was approved and left at the beginning of the following year, serving my first Army contract before my son was born. After completing my service, I attended welding school and planned to pursue traveling welding work. My wife and I sold our home in Texas, bought a camper, and prepared to hit the road. At the last minute, the crew I was set to join disbanded, and I took a traveling concrete position out of Kentucky instead.

For the next year, I traveled between Kentucky and Tennessee, and during that time my wife and I fell in love with Tennessee. I eventually accepted a stationary position with a local company specializing in decorative overlays. As our family grew and we learned we were expecting our daughter, I knew I wanted more for my family. I wanted stability, ownership, and the freedom to be present for my wife and kids. Growing up, my grandfather owned his own business, and I had seen firsthand that while entrepreneurship is hard work, it can also provide flexibility and purpose.

In March of 2023, my wife and I started Visionary Concrete Co. with the hand tools I already owned and the truck I purchased while I was in the Army. We began strictly in residential work, taking on back patio extensions, shop pads, driveways, and any project we could get our hands on. There were times we poured mailbox pads simply to keep momentum and make ends meet. As work increased, we hired a finisher to help manage the volume, and before long we were booked back to back for months. I know that kind of growth doesn’t happen for everyone, and we don’t take it for granted.

My wife plays a huge role in our success. She excels at communication and client relationships, while I focus on delivering high-quality work that reflects our standards. She worked alongside me on many early projects and can still be found on job sites today, helping guide crews and making sure things are done right. Today, we primarily work directly with builders, with a smaller number of homeowner projects throughout the summer. We built this company together, and I truly couldn’t do it without her.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Owning and operating your own business, especially in an industry where you are underbid at every turn, is never easy. Standing out in ways that actually matter is one of the only ways to push through that reality. We have dealt with slow-paying customers, tight cash flow, broken equipment, and rented machines and trailers, doing whatever it took before we were able to invest in our own. All of it adds up to a stressful and uncertain start. My wife and I built this from the ground up without financial backing from family, friends, or banks. We used my paychecks from a full-time job to buy materials and take on side work, one project at a time. Every step has been about building something lasting, something we hope becomes a legacy for our kids.

As you know, we’re big fans of Visionary Concrete Co.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our business was built on the idea that concrete work should be done with clarity, integrity, and pride in craftsmanship. We specialize in residential and light commercial concrete, including foundations, slabs, flatwork, patios, walkways, and structural concrete tied to new construction and additions. What we are most known for is our attention to detail and our ability to communicate clearly throughout a project, from planning and prep to the finished product.

What sets us apart is that we do not cut corners or oversell. We take the time to explain why certain reinforcement, grading, or drainage is necessary, and we make sure our clients and contractor partners understand exactly what they are getting. Our team has experience across many areas of concrete work, and that range allows us to approach each project thoughtfully instead of using a one-size-fits-all solution.

From a brand perspective, we are most proud of the trust we have built. Much of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals, which tells us we are doing something right. We are also proud to be a family-run company that was built without outside financial backing. Every piece of equipment, every crew member, and every expansion came from reinvesting into the business and staying disciplined and focused on our goals.

We want readers to know that our focus is not just on pouring concrete, but on building long-term relationships and providing work that lasts. Our goal is to be a reliable partner for homeowners and contractors who value quality, transparency, and accountability.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Consistency. Showing up prepared, communicating clearly, and doing the work the right way every time has been the most important factor in our success. In an industry where cutting corners and rushing jobs can be tempting, we’ve built our reputation by staying steady and dependable, even when it would have been easier to take shortcuts. That consistency has earned trust with both homeowners and contractors, and it’s what continues to open doors for long-term relationships and repeat work.
