Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Madison.
Hi Chelsea, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began with my own son, who exhibited all the classic signs of a tongue tie. Unfortunately, we received little support from our healthcare team, which made it an incredibly difficult time. We managed, but we didn’t thrive.
I initially observed infants being treated for lip and tongue ties in the office. This sparked my interest, and I soon began exploring MyoFunctional disorders caused by lip, tongue, or cheek ties. As I started treating patients, I realized how undiagnosed conditions like tongue ties or oral dysfunctions can lead to long-term health challenges.
To deepen my expertise, I became certified through the Academy of Orofacial MyoFunctional Therapy and earned an additional certification from the Graduate School of Behavioral Health Sciences through the Coulson Institute for Orofacial Myology. I also pursued specialized training in Infant Oral Motor Therapy to broaden the age range of patients I could help. In between my MyoFunctional training, I studied cranial nerve dysfunctions with an experienced Occupational Therapist, learning how these affect infants. Additionally, I became TummyTime! Method certified.
As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I am passionate about helping families thrive. I’ve also trained in Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT), which I currently offer for infants aged 6 months and younger at our practice. I believe that continued education and training allow me to better serve my patients and support their well-being.
I am available in Franklin on Mondays, alternating between Murfreesboro and Mt. Juliet on Tuesdays, with additional hours in Mt. Juliet on select Wednesdays. Virtual appointments are offered for infants and toddlers as needed.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have definitely been ups and downs. There have been way more ups and I truly have a passion for what I do, as do all of the other therapists I work with. Some of the biggest struggles for me in the beginning was lack of support. When I started this journey, there was so little support as far as getting things rolling with treating clients. Now there is so much access to help that I think it has helped this younger generation tremendously. I initially thought I would always stay with the older population, but as time went on, I began to love working with infants and helping to change their trajectory of growth.
As you know, we’re big fans of The BreatheWell Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
This practice was created in 2020 right after all of the large shut downs. I felt crazy for opening it at the time that I did, but I felt led to do so. I had been working for another practice doing MyoFunctional Therapy for around four years before deciding that I needed to get closer to home in order to continue growing our family.
The first office that I opened was the Mount Juliet location because this is where I was living at the time. My vision for the practice has always been to have multiple “micro” locations in order to have access to care in multiple places. The second was in Franklin, TN and the third was Murfreesboro, TN.
When I originally began the practice, I was a one woman show. Now I have so many amazing support team members that I could not live without. My practice manager has a background in massage therapy and all things holistic and she has been integral for the growth of the practice. All of my other administrative team have been such a help and are amazing at helping families navigate this journey. My tremendous clinical staff is full of advanced MyoFunctional Therapists and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant who has a masters in human lactation. We are so blessed to have such a well rounded team and the families we serve are incredibly important to us.
I am most proud of the high level quality care that we provide. Every single client has a completely customized program developed for them by us, in order to achieve all of the goals they desire. We do not believe in any form of “cookie cutter” oral motor or myofuntional programs and this is how we have achieved such great results.
I would love for our readers to understand exactly what we do. We work with all ages in the practice, from 0 to 100! We do lactation consulting, infant oral motor (muscle function and movement) and also offer MyoFunctional Therapy for older ages. Our goal at all ages is to identify the root causes and work on muscle patterns and functions in order to completely retrain and create new neuromuscular pathways. There is a very specific way that myofunctional exercises should be given, and we take the time to be sure we are giving each person what they are needing. We have a full list of symptoms and red flags to look for in order to know if our practice is right for you. I also like to let all of our readers know that I myself am also trained and qualified to provide CFT. This is something that I use often with infants and older populations and even help teach parents techniques to use at home between their professional visits.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think that in any business, there will be bad luck and good luck. I do not really attribute any of our success or weaknesses to either. I think hard work and a passion for helping people is what has made the business what it is today.
