Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Miller.
Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Chelsea, a curl cutting specialist in Murfreesboro, TN! Here is a bit about me before we dive in. I have a sweet little family: husband, son, and English Bulldog. I love hiking, reading, learning about God, and drinking a cup of hot tea.
Eight years ago, when I began my career as a hairstylist on impulse, I had no plans of opening up a business of my own one day. After a long and nurturing journey with my first salon (and a couple of salon journeys when I moved to Texas briefly), I opened up Tousled Hair Studio in the fall of 2022. I began by providing the same level of quality my clients had experienced at my previous salon and a general wonder about what’s next for me, my salon, and my clients.
A few months in, I began business coaching sessions with a trusted mentor I’ve had all along my journey as a hairstylist. Through our exploration, I found myself thinking back on my childhood to the days of hearing about how my hair needed to be fixed, brushed, straightened, or curled. Anything but what it was. I wear my hair naturally and comfortably these days, and I realized I was surrounded by people who wanted to be able to do the same.
At this point, I knew what was next: becoming a curl specialist. Now, I spend my time learning about waves, curls, and tight curls. I spend my time putting myself out there so people know there is someone in Murfreesboro who WANTS to work with their natural hair and help them. I spend my time teaching clients how to work toward and maintain healthy hair that they can confidently wear into the world.
It’s been a wild journey to get here, and I am so grateful for the present time I’m in.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth roads are “red flags.” There were bumps, exits, u-turns, caution lights, and sirens. Interestingly, the closer we get to what is Good, the more obstacles appear.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
As a hairstylist and curl-cutting specialist, I am known for helping people learn how to care for and wear the hair they were created with confidently.
In my salon, Tousled Hair Studio, I have one-on-one appointments with my clients where we can focus on you and your hair.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Many people impacted my journey, and some of the key people are Kait Kolarich, one of my educators in cosmetology school, who inspired me and opened my eyes to important concepts.
Kara Kemp, my mentor who believed in me from the start, saw my potential and never gave up on me.
Jim McCarrall, the owner of the first salon I worked at, inspired courage and respect, always cheering me on no matter what.
Amie Bissinger, my trainer, and coworker, taught me how to stand independently from my first day in the salon. She led with her heart and showed me the human side of hairdressing.
Jonathan Miller, my husband, has stood by me through all trials. He dreams big and taught me how to live in this moment while shooting for the stars.
Liam Miller, my son, has made time so precious and taught me how to slow down and be present.
Macey Corder handles the heavy lifting of my social media presence and holds me accountable for showing up as an authority in my space.
