Inspiring Conversations with Chelsey Fischer of HER Tribe Midwifery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Fischer.

Hi Chelsey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story began as a child actually, I was always so inspired by pregnancy, birth and motherhood. When I was around 4 years old I used to pretend I was a mom and put a balloon in my belly.
I later thought becoming a nurse would be great and I volunteered on the mom and baby floor at the local hospital when I was in high school.
I then decided I wanted to work in pediatrics so I went to school to become a medical assistant and worked in pediatrics for 9 years in offices and at the local children’s hospital as a float team member on the PICU, NICU and peds floor. My first birth was very traumatic so when I got pregnant with my second baby I wanted something different. I hired a doula and a midwife and had an incredible hospital birth with her which inspired me to become a doula.
While still working in pediatrics I became a certified birth and postpartum doula. I knew this was the tip of my calling into birth work.
I ended up getting pregnant with my 3rd and had him at a local birth center here in Nashville with midwives and had a great experience. I continued to be a doula for the next 7 years. After attending my first homebirth as a doula I felt called to become a homebirth assistant which then led me to becoming a midwife (CPM-Certified Professional Midwife).
My journey to becoming a CPM had a lot of twists and turns and I wanted to give up many many times but after almost 5 years of training I finally sat for the board exam, applied for my license and became a CPM of Tennessee.

I now have my own homebirth practice HER Tribe Midwifery and serve families up to an hour from Shelbyville TN.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey was not a smooth road at all and I wanted to give up and quit multiple times.
I did the bulk of my training during covid and there seemed to be a lot of emergencies and I started to question the safety of birth.

Another significant challenge towards the end of my training was when I was let go by the practice I was with due to a client concern with the care they received from the practice. I ultimately wanted to quit and was not going to finish even though I was so incredibly close. With my faith, God had other plans for me and wanted me to finish. I took my entire family to Wichita, KS for 6 months and finished my training there at a birth center under a CNM (certified nurse midwife).

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about HER Tribe Midwifery ?
