Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Newbury.
Hi Cody, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I found out at a young age that if you wanted something, you better go work for it. It all started when I was 11 years old. My first job was shoveling sidewalks for my older brother on snow days, and weekends when needed. Time was flying by and the next thing I knew I was onto high school. This was the place where everybody started asking you, “what do you want to be when you grow up” or “what are you going to go to college for.” I had no clue, all I said was, “I want to own a business someday.”
Throughout high school, I had two jobs one was Nike, Landscaping, and the other was Snowplowing. I would get out of school early my last two years of high school which gave me the ability to either go cut grass after school or work at Nike. I just really grew a passion for making money. Before I knew it, the high school quickly came to an end then it was time for college. No, I didn’t want to go, but I figured I’ll go for business why not. Well, let’s just say after one semester, I was out of there. I started working in a construction union with my dad making pretty good money. Another year went by and I saved up a sum of money and decided to buy a house for my 20th birthday. Life was great. I was living the “American Dream” so they call it. Shortly, after I grew to want more.
A good friend of mine who started a landscaping business the year prior asked if I’d be interested in helping him build his business. I said “of course” we started having late night drives bouncing ideas off of each other and quickly came up with a plan to execute. From December 2019 to August 2020 we tripled his sales. I learned many good and bad lessons from this experience but it quickly came to an end due to me just not wanting to landscape anymore. In the meantime, a good friend from high school had just started an auto detailing business. That caught my attention because I would always detail my car in my high school days. I just really never thought that it could be a business.
From September 2020 to February 2021 we doubled his sales, started renting a shop in a prime location, and before you knew it, we had three employees on the payroll. But in February 2021, for my birthday I came to Nashville for a little getaway. I instantly fell in love with the city. I learned that the population was growing quickly and it was going to continue to grow. I just had that gut feeling that there was a very good opportunity! Three weeks later, I was driving to Nashville to start a business. The first week I took care of the legal side of the business and started a Cody Car Detail social account. Week two it was time to get to work.
I started running social media ads, wore out two pairs of rollerblades going through neighborhoods putting flyers on mailboxes, started walking into big-name dealerships seeing if they sub-contracted any workout. In the meantime, I was detailing 3 to 4 cars a week of phone calls from my ads. On April 15th, I received a phone call from a Car Max dealership asking if I was interested in details 3 to 4 cars a day for them. Of course, I said “yes” I have been detailing cars for them ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In business, there is no such thing as a smooth road. I have had more struggles than success throughout my entire journey. Many lessons have been learned, good and bad. My biggest challenge was that I was playing with all my own money and put myself in many sink or swim situations. If you are willing to risk it all, you will have the best shot of winning it all.
The hardest thing for me is networking with the correct crowd. Not many 22-year-olds’ have the same hustle as me so I have to try and put myself out to people older than me. Lastly, just getting up and leaving your hometown and family in such a short amount of time is tough as well, you really need to have the motivation and determination to stay strong through the journey.
