Inspiring Conversations with Emily Satterlee of ItyDity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Satterlee.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I started as a songwriter who was struggling to get the sound I wanted for my songs. I knew what I liked when I heard it, but I quickly learned a hard lesson: you can hear it in your head all day, but unless you know who you are as an artist and how to articulate what you want, your music just isn’t going to turn out the way you hope it will. So I set off on a mission to learn everything I could about creating an Artist Sound and artist-producer collaboration to solve the problem for myself and others. I eventually created songs that sounded like me – while only working with producers who understood what I was going for. And I wanted to share my methodology with other songwriters. I went to school for music production and the music business. I taught myself how to code and built my artist development software and producer-matching technology. After years of working with artists in beta, I finally launched my company, ItyDity, in 2018. ItyDity works with artists to get their songs to where they want them to be. We represent hundreds of producers globally, and we’ve worked intimately with artists to bring hundreds of songs to life.

ItyDity’s “Find Your Sound Accelerator” is a big part of what we do, helping songwriters become confident in their sound and create songs that sound like them — without having to know everything about production and the tech side of things.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This endeavor has fortified me, for sure. Mostly it’s been a complete spiritual journey. Business, if you’re doing it right, is about helping people. But unfortunately, for many people, business is all about how to minimize output in order to maximize returns. Some people will tell you to give less of yourself, to protect yourself. And the spiritual journey for me has been about staying the course of helping people and giving as much as I can, even when the world is telling me to protect myself and not give too much of myself. After years of trying to follow the advice of others, I’ve concluded that I want to be out there on the battlefield of love and openness. Not living in restriction and contraction. I want to help people. And I want to give. The spiritual journey is realizing we are limitless.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
ItyDity is one of the few places that songwriters and artists can go to get help figuring out their artist sound. Artist development is greatly lacking in the industry today, and songwriters are just expected to figure it out themselves. But creating a sound that is true to you and stands out is hard to do on your own. That’s what labels helped artists do for decades, but not anymore. So ItyDity helps songwriters and artists get their songs to the place they want them to be and helps make their songs feel the way they want them to feel so that they can achieve the sound they want for their songs and articulate and express what they want with producers who listen to understand. Sometimes, songwriters know the feel of what they want for their songs but not how to get it. ItyDity helps songwriters and artists learn how to get it. And then, we pair them with the right producer and ensure they get their song done right.
