Inspiring Conversations with Gabby Ross of Gabby’s alterations, Gabby’s Formals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Ross.

Hi Gabby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Guatemala. At the age of eleven, while attending middle school, is when I first learned to sew. I even designed and made my own dress for my quinceañera celebration. Since then, my passion for sewing and designing has continued to grow through my career.
After moving to the United States as a young adult, I started working for bridal gown retailer as their alterations manger. From there, I opened my own business specializing in bridal and formal wear for about 10 years. I have been incredibly blessed to have a strong, talented and hard working staff that help me make our customers visions come to life for their special events.
Along with owning Gabby’s Alterations, I also started Gabby’s Formals. Our shop offers a beautiful selection of dresses that come in a diverse selection of sizes, colors, styles and price points.
Most importantly, I am a wife, a mom of 3 amazing kids, as well of two sweet dogs, a daughter and sister, very involved with my church and as well as being really grateful to have a life full of wonderful friends and customers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When first coming to a new country, learning a new language and a new way of life it has been very exciting, but at times challenging. Nothing would have prepared me for the struggles that have come with my husband’s diagnosis of cancer. He has persevered through surgery, chemo treatments and radiation for two years so far. Unfortunately and understandably it hasn’t been easy for our family. We are continuing to stay as strong and positive as we possibly can.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Gabby’s alterations, Gabby’s Formals ?
Making sure our brides feel beautiful and ready for their big day or making sure the mom of the bride/groom feels just as special is what we strive for. We enjoy working with them until the day they walk down the aisle.
One special trend that has been so exciting to work with the brides on is the repurposing of mom’s, grandma’s or anyone special in their lives wedding gown. I have made beautiful wedding gowns special just for the bride, jumpsuits or cute little dresses for the reception or the rehearsal dinner, dressing gowns, pocket squares for the groom, dad, ring bearer or groomsmen. I have even made flower girl dresses, christening gowns or receiving blankets repurposed from a special wedding gown. It has been fun to make these special dresses make more memories in a new way. It’s such a sentimental and personal way to give these dresses another life.
I am grateful I get a chance to be a part of so many peoples special day!!!!!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have been very fortunate, that with hard work, attention to detail as well as striving to give the best customer service possible has lead others to sharing and recommending us to others. We are also blessed to have been recommended by a lot of formal and bridal shops as well. Word of mouth recommendations have been the best networking tool we have.
