Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant Emerson.
Hi Grant, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started out as a musician — I spent years touring and recording as a member of Delta Rae, which took me all over the country several times over, and to far corners of the world beyond that: Australia, Europe, Bahrain, Djibouti. Working at that level, night after night, really articulated something for me about what it takes to do high-quality work consistently — the discipline, the standards, the commitment to showing up and delivering no matter the circumstances. It was also a crash course in building an audience, running campaigns, and all the unglamorous logistics behind creative work. I helped build and run the band’s fan portal, developing monthly interactive experiences to drive connection and push at what was possible with the internet as a medium — always asking how you could create genuine engagement, not just broadcast content. Then the lockdown years hit, and that question became urgent. When live music disappeared overnight, the web became the only way we could connect with our audience. Working inside that constraint while still trying to create real emotional resonance was genuinely fascinating. That tension between limitation and meaning is something that’s stuck with me ever since.
That curiosity eventually turned into a career. I founded Humangoodkind Designs in 2020 to work directly with small businesses and creative professionals on their web presence — mostly Shopify and Webflow — handling everything from design and development to SEO and strategy.
In 2024 I took a developer role at SVPWorldwide — the parent company behind the iconic Singer sewing machine brand — where I led Shopify theme development across North American, Mexican, and European storefronts inside a global codebase. A different scale than agency work, and a good pressure-test. That role wrapped at the end of 2025, and I’ve since moved into a new chapter: I’m now the Shopify and Omni Channel Operations Manager at Thistle Farms, a Nashville-based social enterprise I deeply respect, while continuing to run Humangoodkind alongside it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha — smooth roads? I’m not sure those exist.
Honestly, I feel genuinely fortunate to have been able to make the sacrifices that come with being a professional musician and creative for 15+ years — making records, performing on late night television, building something real out of what looked from the outside like an impossible career. And then to have the capacity to pivot into software development on the other side of that? I don’t take either of those things for granted.
What I’ve come to understand is that both paths were hard precisely because they didn’t come naturally to me — and that’s exactly what kept me engaged with them. Carl Jung said “where your fear is, there is your task,” and I’ve tried to apply that framework honestly throughout my life. Whether it was chord sequences I couldn’t figure out or computer frameworks I didn’t understand, the discomfort was usually pointing at something worth pursuing. Leaning into that instead of away from it has been the through-line.
It’s been an interesting road. I’m glad I still have gas in the tank to keep going and see what’s around the next bend.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Humangoodkind Designs is a solo web solutions studio specializing in Shopify development and high-quality marketing sites. The clients I work best with tend to be at a specific inflection point: they built something real, their business has scaled, and now they’re ready to show up in a way that’s aligned with where they’re actually going — not where they started. Many of them are making the decision to finally go all-in on their digital presence — committing to e-commerce, web tools, and digital marketing in a serious way after years of treating it as an afterthought. They want a digital experience that can stand alongside their competition and their inspiration. That’s where I come in.
What sets me apart is a creative background that most developers don’t have. I can move fluidly across SEO, visual design, and information architecture — I’m not just executing a brief, I’m helping solve the underlying problem. I’m known as a creative solutions provider, and that reputation has been built over years of showing up for clients the same way, project after project.
What I’m most proud of are my client relationships. Several of the people I work with have been with me since I started doing this work over six years ago. That kind of retention doesn’t happen by accident — it comes from genuinely caring about their business outcomes, not just the deliverable.
A big part of what I do is help businesses migrate from outdated platforms to modern ones built for where the internet is going — and I deliberately design myself out of the equation in the process. The goal is always for my clients to be empowered and independent, not locked into a developer relationship indefinitely. Two recent examples: I helped a local Nashville coffee brand consolidate their wholesale B2B operation into a single Shopify storefront — one source of truth, automated workflows, less manual work, more room to scale. And I designed and developed a web template for a literary nonprofit that elevated their brand to attract a higher caliber of donors, while giving their team the ability to publish new events by simply filling out a form — no code, no page builders, no developer required.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to work with me is to start a conversation — I offer free consultations, so there’s no pressure or commitment to just talking through what you’re trying to build. You can reach me through my website at humangoodkinddesigns.com, find me on LinkedIn, or follow along on Instagram where I share work and process.
And honestly, the most meaningful way to support what I’m building is a simple referral. If you know a business owner who’s ready to take their web presence seriously — whether that’s launching on Shopify, rebranding their marketing site, or finally going all-in on digital — send them my way. Word of mouth has been the backbone of this studio from the beginning, and I don’t take that lightly.
