Inspiring Conversations with Jamie Duncan of Build Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Duncan.

Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My path to Build Nashville wasn’t a straight line, but looking back, every step pointed here. I started in the mortgage industry, which gave me a deep understanding of how people think about one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. That foundation shaped the way I approach every client relationship — with transparency, intention, and a real respect for what’s at stake.

From there, I moved into homebuilding, and that’s where I met Shaun. He brought an incredible depth of knowledge in trim and project management, and we just clicked. We saw the same gap in the market and the same standard of quality that we felt wasn’t being met. So we started small — a house, then another — and built the company the same way we build homes: one decision at a time, without cutting corners.

That was the beginning of Build Nashville. Today we have a team of more than 20 people and hundreds of homes across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. The scale has changed, but the standard hasn’t. We still treat every project like it’s the top priority, because to that client, it is.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth isn’t exactly the word I’d use. We started small and hired as needed, which meant we were building the plane while flying it for a long time. The past year has been incredibly difficult — and honestly, the past five years post-COVID have tested us in ways we didn’t anticipate. Tariffs, material shortages, backorders, staffing turnover. You name it, we’ve navigated it. There were moments that required us to make hard calls to protect the business and the people in it.

But we’ve kept moving forward. Shaun and I step into the day-to-day as often as needed — that’s never changed regardless of how much the company has grown. And we’ve built a team we’re genuinely proud of. Our project managers and assistant project managers are executing at a high level on site every day, and our design team is fully equipped to manage everything across our scope, from our one-of-a-kind, luxury market homes all the way to 10,000 square foot custom estates.

We’ve been impressed with Build Nashville , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Build Nashville specializes in new construction across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Our core portfolio spans luxury market homes that we build to sell, semi-custom builds, and fully custom estates — including multi-generational living. What sets us apart is our in-house design team, which is rare in this industry. Having design, construction, and client communication all under one roof means nothing falls through the cracks and our clients have a seamless experience from concept to close.

We’re known for high-end finishes, thoughtful customization, and out-of-the-box design. Every home we build is different — that’s intentional. We bring new ideas and innovation to every project, regardless of the size or scope.

What we’re most proud of is the relationships we’ve built. We have clients who purchased a market home and came back years later to build their custom dream home. We have trade partners we’ve worked alongside for years who share our standards and our values. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident — it’s the result of doing the work right and genuinely caring about the outcome.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Whether you’re ready to break ground tomorrow or still dreaming about what your future home looks like, we’d love to hear from you. Every great build starts with a conversation, and we genuinely enjoy learning about people’s visions and goals — even years before a project becomes a reality.

On the collaboration side, we’re always looking to connect with realtors who can help us find the right lots, and we partner closely with local architects and trade partners to bring each project to life. Those relationships are at the heart of how we work.

And if you want to stay connected in the meantime, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn — we share our work, our process, and the stories behind the builds. A Google review from someone who has experienced our work firsthand also means the world to us and helps more people find us.
