Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer M. Finley of Premier Family Doula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer M. Finley.

Hi Jennifer M., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My first interaction with the birth world was when I was only 5 years old. I remember my mother being in the hospital and had just given birth to my brother. It was an amazing experience that I would store in the back of my mind until adulthood. During my second pregnancy in 2012, a spark was lit. I wanted a more natural birth but having a home birth wasn’t an option. I ended up hiring a doula for my birth at Vanderbilt, and this time it was different. I was very much empowered by her educating me on all my options and how birth was intended. After a very fast but amazing birth, I knew the path I was destined to walk. Since then I have attended several training’s including DONA International, ProDoula, Institute of Birth Breath and Death, and The Curtis Method. I am now a Certified HypnoDoula, Childbirth Preparation Instructor, and have created my own Daddy-Doula class. I have worked in both Utah and Tennessee and have now spent more than 2,000 hours helping mothers in labor and even more educating.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely not been an easy road. Starting your own business is hard enough, but because of moving states, I’ve had to restart my business three separate times. I’ve also had to struggle going through a long divorce and a short time of being homeless. However, Going through all my struggles has made me even more grateful for the blessing I have.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Premier Family Doula is a growing doula agency that serves the women and families of Middle TN. We offer birth and postpartum doula services, private and group classes, a lending library, and more. We’re here to help educate and support all birth options without judgment or pushback. Our classes and services are unique and specifically designed for you and your chosen birth partner. We teach about how the female body works during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, and the tools and comfort measures to use during those times. We also have a class that no one else does, The Daddy Doula class. It is one of our newest classes that is geared towards the birthing partner and what they need to know to help the laboring mother.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t know how much luck really plays a part. As cliché as it might sound, being dedicated and working hard for my goals is what has helped me the most.
