Inspiring Conversations with Jeremy Forsyth of Forsyth CPA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Forsyth.

Hi Jeremy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In March of 2020, I was unexpectedly let go from my job. In the midst of the pandemic, with every company cutting costs and beginning their work from home campaign, the job market was nearly non-existent. I knew I had to do something to provide for my family, and I had always wanted to start a small CPA firm that targeted clients that the larger firms seemed to overlook. I began my business in June 2020 as a CPA firm targeting small to medium-sized firms, providing monthly accounting, tax, and advisory services to entrepreneurs who should be focusing their time and attention toward business development and growth. It’s been both challenging and exceedingly rewarding – being able to connect clients to each other as their needs arise, watching businesses grow from the ground up, and seeing people’s lives change beyond their wildest imagination has been so fun to witness and be a part of.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m very fortunate in that it’s been a pretty smooth road. Opening a business in the midst of a pandemic is never something you can plan for, but we have been able to take that challenge and present our clients with opportunities. Ultimately, the company grew very fast, which turned into a bit of a struggle. As just about any small business owner will tell you, it becomes very cumbersome very fast to wear so many hats as a business owner. Between providing deliverables, managing human resources, seeking business development opportunities, and maintaining client relations, my available time dried up very quickly. I was very lucky to have had a great friendship with a former colleague, Kedron Hilario, and was able to bring him on board quickly to help me navigate these uncharted waters. Together we’ve been able to continue to show strong growth and identify some really, really good employees that we’ve been incredibly fortunate to bring on as well.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Forsyth CPA was started in an attempt to help some of the often overlooked companies find sound, dependable, accurate accounting and financial services. Prior to starting this company, I had worked in public accounting and all of our clients were very well-established companies. I began to notice that it was difficult for small companies to find a CPA that they could trust, rely on, and get in touch with as needed. Both Kedron Hilario and I are Certified Public Accountants with the state of Tennessee. Every month, each client’s books are reviewed by either myself or Kedron, so each set of books gets reviewed by a CPA at month end close.

The biggest item that sets us apart from other CPA firms is our communication. As we began speaking with clients who were looking to change their accounting providers, we would often inquire as to why they were looking to make a switch. Almost every time, they would mention their inability to get in touch with their accountant. We recognized that as a pain point for many clients and we strive to answer every call, text, or email very quickly. We have internal goals that we strive to reach in this regard that are very aggressive but also integral to setting ourselves apart from other firms. The clients we target are small businesses, which are individuals and families. These aren’t large corporations – these are small clients who need a CPA who can quickly provide them with documents and answers. Whether it’s a set of financials to give to a lender for a new house, car, or business loan, or its advisement as to the tax implications on a large purchase, we make sure to always communicate with a sense of urgency.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Accountability, dependability, and communication. It’s incredibly important for us to be accountable and dependable to our clients. There is a lot of weight that our clients take off their shoulders and put on to ours, and we have to make sure that we treat each client as if their business is our business. Our end goal is to walk step by step next to our clients as they grow their business and support them in every capacity we can.
