Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Bain.
Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a medical household so have been around the medical system my entire life. In college, I really got into chemistry and wanted to find a way to combine that with my medical interest. This led me to complete my doctorate in pharmacy and then I moved on to complete two post-doctorate years of training in clinical pharmacy. My first year was general practice clinical work in North Carolina and then I went on to complete a critical care residency at the University of Kentucky. After finishing up my school work I began my hospital clinical work at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, CA. After a few years there my family and I decided to move back closer to home so I took a clinical position in Nashville. During my clinical work, I would round with doctors on patients in the ICU daily in addition to a heavy education/research development.
I have given several national, regional, and local talks on many subjects including anticoagulation, clinical pharmacy, and high-level teaching techniques. I have over 20 peer-reviewed publications to my name and have developed and implemented many protocols in the hospitals where I have worked that have gone on to save millions of dollars. After several years I began to see that these savings were never reaching the patients, the groups I worked for were just keeping these savings and investing them in other things. So eventually I decided to go out on my own to implement these same strategies in a way that could directly impact patients. This is what led me to compound.
In our compounding pharmacy, we make everything from scratch. By doing this we can customize each person’s medication to them as well as cut out a lot of the middleman cost.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever smooth, especially as you are going through it.
However, the bumps in the road have ultimately always been when I have learned and grown the most. The training that I went through was some of the toughest that is available. While it required so much of my time in the end it opened so many doors and has made me the pharmacist I am now.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rx Compound Centre?
We are a compounding pharmacy. Compounding is more of an old-school pharmacy that allows us to make the medications we dispense to patients from scratch. You can correlate it too fast food vs a restaurant. Most commercial pharmacies buy their medications from warehouses and count them out as orders come through. We buy the raw material and actually make the medications in our facility.
When you go to see your provider they are left to try and get you to fit the MEDICATIONS that are commercially available. What if the dose needs to be adjusted? What if you have allergies? What if the medication is no longer available commercially? What if the medication is really expensive? By compounding your prescription we can take all of this into consideration and can make the medication fit YOU.
Any big plans?
Moving forward we are continuing to expand and grow.
Even in the compounding world, we have our sights on growth as our model is very different from others that are similar to us. So much is about educating the public. You have options for where and how you get your medications.
