Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Powell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am honored to serve Williamson County as a Pediatric Chiropractor where I help kids overcome their perfect storms. I am native to Tennessee having been born and raised in Memphis, TN, where I was very active as a youth. Growing up, I developed a passion for healthcare following my father around handling acute injuries as an athletic trainer and preventive conditioning as a personal trainer. I very quickly became passionate about Chiropractic for its part in the prevention as a non-medical, non-surgical form of health care.
During school, I developed a passion for helping kids. I have loved working with kids for as long as I can remember, starting as a GameZone attendant in a local Gym, to coaching swim lessons and serving as a local swim coach to a youth swim team. My current passion is helping kids overcome what I call perfect storm challenges such as Autism, ADHD, and Epilepsy to name a few. My passion for helping these kids comes from two experiences. The first is growing up with a brother diagnosed with Epilepsy.
By the time we were older kids (8 and 9), my brother started to experience moments where he would “zone out” in very random episodic intervals. We later learned this was due to internal epileptic seizures. We spent much of the following years going in and out of different doctors’ offices, lots of MRIs, and prescription medicine that had a wait-and-see approach. The second experience was being an overnight sitter for a child with Autism. I met this little boy and his mom when I was working at the local gym. After a few visits, she noticed the way I interacted with him and asked if I’d be willing to be a sitter for him. I hadn’t known much about autism before this experience, but I learned so much in my time with him.
Soon after graduating from school, I caught wind of a postgraduate certification with a group called PX Docs (PX stands for Pediatric Experience). They offered a certification program that helped kids like my brother and the boy I babysat. It was a no-brainer for me to register for this certification. Upon receiving my certification in Pediatric Neuro-Tonal Adjusting I have helped dozens of kids with all sorts of neurological conditions that we put under the umbrella of Perfect Storm.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been smooth but with a major change in direction that was kind of bumpy! I never thought I would be giving the care and seeing the results I am today.
I thought I would be a traditional chiropractor taking care of a typical patient with low back pain or headaches (maybe occasionally seeing kids). When I received my certification in pediatric care we made a complete 180 in the direction of our practice.
Any change can be messy and we felt so passionate about the change we made it before our 1st anniversary. Since the change, however, we have thrived and loved every minute of kids running up and down our halls!
We’ve been impressed with Addasu Family Chiropractic, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are experts in Drug-Free Pediatric, Prenatal, and Family Health Care! We specialize in neurologically based chiropractic care. Addasu’s specialty in pediatric care is what truly sets it apart. Achieving incredible results from fussy colicky infants, to constantly sick kids, to sensory and spectrum challenges.
Every aspect of our care is focused around the nervous system. We take the time to truly listen to your concerns and create individualized goals for each person who joins our office. We walk alongside you on your journey to health and happiness!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
The book I am most often recommending for anyone struggling with making a big decision is Start with Why by Simon Sinek. I also love to encourage people to read Atomic Habits by James Clear.
These two books were pivotal for me in opening up my practice. My favorite app is Notability, and my favorite podcast is Craig Groeschel’s Leadership Podcast.
