Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Peters
Hi Lindsay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Louisiana and have always loved music, theatre, performing, all of it. I got into the theatre program at Belmont here in Nashville for college and knew I wanted to go there. My oldest brother and his wife already lived here so moving 9 hours away from home at 18 seemed a little less scary with them nearby. I did the whole thing, got my BFA, performed for a living, moved to Orlando and worked as a performer and also started teaching there, too. I got to be a part of the Youth Education Series they did at Disney World where I would teach school groups different things while exploring the Disney parks. I loved it! Once I realized how much I enjoyed teaching, I decided getting my Masters in education may be the way to go. During this time I had also met my (now) husband (we met working at Disney and yes it’s as cute as it sounds). He is from England so we knew we were going to end up somewhere besides Orlando and I really wanted to have a teaching career. So I made my way back to Belmont, got my masters in theatre ed, and then we moved to New York City for his job! I started teaching there while doing improv on the side for funsies. After we got married in 2017, we knew we wanted to eventually have kids and carrying a stroller up and down the metro stairs was not for me, so we decided to move back to Nashville. We did all the grown up things. Moved to the ‘burbs, got a house, 2 cats, and got pregnant. I was teaching theatre at a local public middle school during the 2019-2020 school year. Our first baby was due March 2020. You all know how that went. So we became parents and welcomed our daughter, Posey, during lockdown. The next year I was not ready to go back to teaching full time and be away from our daughter. My school graciously let me go part time and only direct a couple of shows. But after being home I knew I didn’t want to go back full time and the SAHM life was for me. So we figured it out and I have been able to stay home! BUT I knew I still wanted to be involved in the arts somehow. Once I found Music Together and realized there were no classes like these in our little community, I figured I had to bring it to town! I trained and got certified to teach Music Together, started my own business, and had another baby all in 2022. Since then I’ve been running and teaching MTMJ in town. Our community has grown and I’ve gotten to meet so many wonderful families and see their littles grow as well as watch these families become closer by sharing music. Our two girls, Posey and Maisie, have gotten to begin their lives with this music and see their mom run a business and I am so glad I’ve been able to share that with them. My business has grown and I’ve been able to hire another teacher to help with the class load which has been incredible. I don’t know where the future will take us, but being able to share this music and my love of the arts with our community and bring joy to our families has been so wonderful and worth every minute. I can only hope we can continue to grow and make music together with everyone.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
From starting this process to now has gone relatively smooth! With a teaching background, that part came pretty natural even though there are certainly challenges that come with it daily. But the business side of things has definitely been a learning curve. I lean on my husband and community when I have a business related question. There are so many professionals in town that if I throw out a question, I usually get an answer. But overall, besides a pandemic and adding a 2nd kiddo, it has gone relatively smooth! Of course there are always setbacks, but the joy of teaching and sharing this with the community has stayed consistent and that’s the goal!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are music and movement classes for littles ages 0-5 and the grown ups who love them. Music Together is a worldwide company and I own and run the classes here in Mt. Juliet. Our music changes with the seasons, so you aren’t getting your typical “kids” songs. These are beautiful works of art, some you’ve heard, some you haven’t, that introduce our littles to a variety of music, rhythms, dances, and so much more. We typically have classes in semesters, so when you sign up for a class you are getting a semester of classes as well as a music book and access to our app with the songs. I am really proud of starting this business having never been a business owner and running/teaching while also being a stay-at-home-mom to our two girls. Being a business owner is not easy. Being a mom is not always easy. I have so much respect for all the parents (and educators) out here just trying their best and trying to raise this next generation to be empowered, strong, and kind.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We offer a free trial class! You can email me and we can get it set up!
