Inspiring Conversations with Lucas Hutson of Good Human Real Estate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Hutson.

Hi Lucas, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In the winter of 2015, I came to the conclusion that I am simply not cut out to sit at a desk 40 hours a week. The worst part about it wasn’t the hours or the mind-numbing boredom, it was the fact that there was no sense of accomplishment, no feeling of doing something that mattered…to anyone. Even if I really buckled down no one cared just like no one cared if I spent all day on Reddit, as long as I answered the phone. The bottom line is I didn’t like spending such a huge chunk of my finite time on this Earth just for a mediocre paycheck.

So, my wife and I started brainstorming. It wasn’t long, at all, before we landed on real estate as a good option for me. I would be able to make my own hours, earn more money the harder I worked, and it is meaningful work. Not to mention one of our favorite past times is going to open houses, or the parade of homes, and binging Fixer Upper.

By April of 2016, I was a licensed Realtor and was presented with an opportunity that honestly changed my life. One of our long-time family friends and his son had a real estate team and they asked me to join them and help with some of the workloads. This was not just any real estate team I was joining. When I started working on the Calhoon Team they had helped more buyers find homes than any other agent in TN, ever. I was able to soak in so much knowledge and learn how to be a top agent from the day I started. Over the 4+ years working with them we did more deals than I know. Not a bad way for to learn your new career. I will never be able to repay them or tell them enough how much that still means to me.

Early in 2020, it was time for me to start thinking about the future and how I wanted my career to evolve and grow. Seeing as we were stuck in the house, I had plenty of time to mull things over and see what felt right. There was a big part of me that always wanted to have my own real estate company, but I am the type of person that needs more motivation than dollar signs. Then it clicked. I would open a brokerage, but it wouldn’t be a cold unfeeling corporation that only cared about money. It would be an exciting adventure, a cause for change, a way to bring more goodness to people’s lives, and advocate for marginalized communities, a friend to the community. Talk about motivation.

I spent the next several months brainstorming and planning and crumpling up paper into little balls and throwing them vaguely toward my wastebasket like in the movies. I wanted everything about this business to be intentional. Every time I had to make a decision about the structure of the company, or compensation, or anything I would first ask does this make sense, and is it fair? I am sure we are all familiar with the feeling of a policy or rule either not making sense or not being fair or both, I didn’t want that.

Most of time was spent on the outreach portion of the business because without its Good Human Real Estate would not exist. We decided that we would partner with a handful of non-profit organizations every year and they would receive a portion of our proceeds and we would be there to do whatever else they needed, volunteering, increasing awareness, cold calling for donations, anything.

We are currently partnered with a terrific local organization called True You TN. They are in the process of opening the first and only group foster home specifically for LGBTQ+ youth in the southeast. After learning about the good work, they are doing and speaking with their founder we just had to come alongside and do what we can to help.

In December of 2020, we officially opened our doors and it has been incredible. We are so incredibly thankful for the support we have received and the many people cheering us on. Our story has just begun and I promise you it will be a good one.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the things that have made me so confident in what we are trying to do is actually how easily the obstacles have been conquered. Never in my life have I caught so many “green lights’ during a project.

Every time I would come to an item on my list that I just knew was going to be a struggle everything would just fall into place. It’s almost as if the universe wants this to happen as much as we do!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a real estate company that puts people over profit. Our goal is to provide our clients with an unforgettable experience where they don’t just feel like another number. We are driven by relationships not paychecks.

The proudest thing has to be the work we do with non-profits. We are currently partnered with True You TN which is such a fantastic organization that is doing extremely important work.

I want them to know that we care about our clients and what they want and that we work very hard to make sure our clients are pleased with us and that they will consider us their realtor for life.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up my two favorite things to do was acting and Fishing. From the time I was about 12 until my early 20’s, I was either on a stage or at the river. I am still at the river a lot just don’t have time for shows.
