Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Otto.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved music. I grew up listening to my grandfather play the piano, and I remember sitting with him on the bench, completely mesmerized as I watched his fingers move so quickly up and down the keys. He was an amazing pianist, but I guess I never put two and two together when I was younger that having a career in the music industry was actually possible. I thought you had to sit at a desk, working the 9-5 grind.
I took piano lessons for a few years as a kid to follow in his footsteps, but my interests moved to volleyball, so I dropped piano all together to focus on sports.
Fast forward about 20 years and I promised myself that after I passed the CPA exam, I would get back into piano. I missed playing piano, but what’s interesting is that I got into guitar instead. A few lessons later, I knew how to play the C, G & D chords and from there I just started noodling with melodies, humming words as I played.
I didn’t realize I was still carrying a lot of unresolved feelings from my father’s and sister’s deaths, so I began writing down what I was feeling. It was great therapy and still is!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road; but in my opinion, nothing worth doing ever is. You get into the music business completely naïve and not knowing much at all. And unfortunately, you sometimes meet people who don’t always have the best intentions, but when you find your tribe (as the saying goes), there’s just something so magical that happens when you crate something from nothing. It’s addicting.
We can get so caught up in the dream of having a radio cut (and believe, me, I would love to have that one day, too!!) but I think the journey getting there is one worth taking. It’s about the relationships and experiences along the way that make traveling on this road so much fun. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
We’ve been impressed with Eager to Please Podcast, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I struggled with low self-esteem and people pleasing my entire life, so much so that when I hit 40, I didn’t recognize who I had become. When my marriage crumbled, I had this awakening that I wanted to create something where others who felt the same way had a space to feel heard, so my podcast called “Eager to Please” was born. Every month, I release a song related to the theme of the month and then we spend the next 3 weeks talking about it with guest speakers and personal stories.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Getting our puppy, Chloe, for Christmas. She was a Dalmatian.
