Inspiring Conversations with Omar Fonseca of MVP Specialty Marketing Business

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Fonseca.

Hi Omar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Raised in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) by way of Puerto Rico. My Dad & Grandfather are both retired Army Veterans, my Mom still works for the Army, so naturally I enlisted in the Air Force directly out of high school. I stayed in the Air Force for 6 years, and after that going back to school to pursue my education. I attended the University of Maryland and earned a Dual Bachelors Degree in Marketing and International Business. During this time I started my marketing career for a financial corporation, and then as a Marketing Consultant for a Digital Marketing Company.

But my passion has always been Sports, Music, and Entertainment so I decided to pursue a dream in music as an Artist & Producer. I started For Progress Only (4PO) Entertainment and a friend of mine from the Air Force and I started a Progressive Hip-Hop Duo called 4PO. We released our debut album “A Story About Hip-Hop…” (turned out to be the only album) in 2009, which was critically but not commercially acclaimed. After living the semi-celebrity life for a few years, I decided to get back into Marketing full-time again. I moved to Nashville and worked for an Advertising Agency followed by a Healthcare Company.

Following that I started teaching Digital Marketing at Vanderbilt University and other Universities around the United States, which I am still teaching presently. I am also involved in a Veterans in Residence program for Bunker Labs, a program to help Veterans build their business. Unfortunately in February, I broke my leg, which made basic living hard without being able to walk for 3 months.

Recently I decided to put it all together and start my own Business, a Sports & Entertainment Marketing Consulting Agency called MVP Specialty Marketing Business along with a Sports & Entertainment Podcast called Ball & Buds! While we don’t currently have any clients, we are building and growing internally, and looking for special clients.

But no matter what, I’m always striving to be a better person in life and at my business. As well as being more creative & entertaining, helping my students, and volunteering to help the homeless/less fortunate communities!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many obstacles & challenges from injuries to losses, but we all face issues. It’s about how you respond, how you get up from falling, and how you make mends & build bridges in your relationships.

Life is a journey filled with opportunities and hardships that will test us. The road will not always be smooth in our travels, but we will always have the mental and physical fortitude to make it through everything.

I believe that so much, that 4PO has a song called “Road Less Traveled” and I got tattoos on my forearms, one says “God grant me the serenity…” and the other says “This too shall pass.” But the best part is that I had “Grant” and “Pass,” semi-scratched out to relay that every situation in life will pass and you will be granted everything you need to grow through it, but those times will not be easy nor smooth.

Luck, destiny, and happenstance all of these things occur, and have played a part in getting me to where I am today. But you still need to network and put in the hard work to make things happen.
