Inspiring Conversations with Reid Horn of Horn Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reid Horn

Hi Reid, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up watching my own father struggle with mental health. He was a man who was distant and closed off in a small town where vulnerability was a rarity. That early experience left me wondering: what if there was another way? What if men could share their pain openly and build real, supportive connections? That question lit a fire in me, a fire that fueled my journey into therapy and drove me to seek authentic mentorship and honest friendships.

Early on, I chose to tackle my distant relationship with my father head-on by engaging in personal therapy, taking the time to meet with mentors, and daring to get vulnerable. This intentional decision wasn’t just about healing old wounds but about learning to navigate distressing emotions in a healthy, constructive way. I began to see that too many of us spend our lives coping rather than truly healing. And I asked myself: How can I help other men break free from the cycle of ignoring their pain?

My breakthrough came when I committed to deep personal work and joined a men’s group. In that space, vulnerability wasn’t seen as weakness but a strength. I found a community of mentors and peers who trusted each other enough to be real. And I started wondering: How can I bring that same spirit of openness and support to every man who feels isolated in his pain?

That’s how Horn Counseling was born. A place built on the conviction that every person deserves a safe, welcoming space to be their authentic self. At Horn Counseling, we celebrate all races, religions, origins, sexual orientations, and genders. We’re grounded in anti-racist and culturally affirming care because we believe transformation happens when every individual is seen and celebrated for who they truly are.

Today, we’ve partnered with local organizations to provide affordable, professional therapy services, ensuring that support is within reach for everyone. And as I look to the future, I ask: What if we could create even more spaces where vulnerability is not just accepted but celebrated? What if every person could embrace their authentic self without fear or shame?

Every step of my journey, every challenge and every breakthrough, has been about more than just overcoming personal pain. It’s about inviting others to step into their power, to show up for themselves, and to build healthier relationships with themselves and those around them.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road definitely hasn’t been smooth. Early on, I faced my father’s distant relationship and the heavy emotional weight that came with it. Instead of letting that define me, I chose to confront the pain head-on. I dove into personal therapy, sought out mentors, and dared to be vulnerable, even when it felt scary. Those steps weren’t easy. They came with moments of raw, unfiltered emotions, and I’m incredibly grateful for the people who walked beside me during those times, helping me make sense of my experiences and guiding me toward healing.

The journey was about more than just overcoming personal pain, it was about wrestling with long-held beliefs about masculinity that no longer served me, learning that vulnerability is a strength, and trusting healthy people. Every struggle, every tough moment, became a building block that transformed my approach to therapy and life. Each challenge deepened my understanding of pain and resilience, fueling my passion for helping others find healthier ways to work through their emotions.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a curious soul with a deep love for adventure and connection. I remember getting lost in the woods with my younger brother, turning every misadventure into a chance to explore and learn about the world around me. That innate curiosity wasn’t just about wandering off the beaten path but discovering who I was and what truly mattered.

As I grew older, that sense of adventure carried me far beyond the familiar. I fell in love with road trips, driving across most of the U.S., and even ventured abroad to Africa. There, I partnered with local mental health organizations, eager to provide care, learn new approaches, and meet a wide variety of people with diverse therapy goals. Every journey, every new community, taught me a little more about myself, others and the world around me.

Nature has always been my sanctuary. Even now, I gravitate towards hiking trips to escape the hustle, reflect on life, and get lost in a good book. One of my favorite authors is John Steinbeck. His writings don’t just describe the world in vivid detail but delves deep into the character’s thoughts, intentions, and hidden hurts. Steinbeck’s work reminds me that every person and every moment has layers waiting to be uncovered.
