Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Stone
Hi Rich, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Rich Stone, and I’m a veteran of the specialty coffee industry who broke away from the larger corporate world to create something more meaningful. I believe that you don’t need to sacrifice values to build a successful business. Whether big or small, it’s possible to thrive while ensuring every link in the supply chain—from farm to cup—receives fair compensation and a chance to lead a good, dignified life.
At the heart of my work is a deep commitment to sharing the stories of coffee farmers, who pour their lives into every bean they cultivate. But it doesn’t stop there. I also roast their coffee with care and precision, bringing that same passion and quality to every cup, for consumers and coffee shops alike.
In addition to helping farmers around the world, I’m dedicated to giving back to my local community here in Knoxville, Tennessee. As a business owner, I see the value in connecting people, creating opportunities, and fostering growth right where I live.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rich, faced many challenges in building and running his business. From the start, standing out in the competitive coffee market was tough, and as the company grew, managing the increased demand while keeping up quality became a constant struggle. Sourcing beans ethically and dealing with supply chain issues added more hurdles, especially with fluctuating prices and global changes.
The pandemic also tested the business, forcing Rich to quickly adapt to new ways of selling and managing the shop. Through it all, he stayed committed to offering high-quality coffee and building strong relationships with his customers. Despite the obstacles, Rich’s dedication and passion for his work have helped Memoirs Coffee Roasters thrive.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Memoirs Coffee Roasters LLC?

At 32, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s, ADHD, and OCD spectrum. In many ways, I see my neurodivergence as one of my greatest superpowers. It’s allowed me to feel deeply, connect on a level many might miss, and see the world in a way that strengthens my business relationships. It’s this sense of empathy and attention to detail that drives me to create a company that doesn’t just profit but actively enriches the lives of everyone it touches—whether that’s a farmer halfway across the world or a local customer walking into a shop in my hometown.
Looking toward the future, I have big plans to open a roasting facility and coffee education center here in Knoxville. This space will offer people a chance to learn about the complexities of coffee and explore the many paths one can take in the coffee industry. I envision it as a place where farmers can visit, share their stories and cultures, and inspire others in the process. A coffee shop, a stage, and a hub for community engagement—this will be a space for connection, growth, and learning.
I’ve built this company with one goal in mind: to prove that business, when done with heart, can be a force for good.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Building Memoirs Coffee Roasters has definitely been a team effort, and I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a strong network of people who’ve supported and guided me along the way. My journey wouldn’t have been the same without a few key mentors, teammates, and advocates who played pivotal roles.
First, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the coffee farmers I’ve met throughout my journey. Their dedication to their craft and willingness to share their stories have shaped how I approach my work. Without their commitment, Memoirs wouldn’t have the authenticity and heart that it does.
I’ve also had some amazing mentors in the coffee industry who’ve been invaluable in helping me navigate the complexities of roasting, sourcing, and building a sustainable business. They’ve shared their knowledge, encouraged me during tough times, and helped me see the bigger picture.
My local community in Knoxville has been incredibly supportive, too. The connections I’ve made with other small business owners, clients, and coffee lovers in the area have been vital in building the business. They’ve cheered me on and provided feedback that’s helped me grow and improve, both personally and professionally.
And of course, my team at Memoirs deserves credit. They’ve been integral to creating the atmosphere and culture that I’ve envisioned for the company. Their passion, hard work, and belief in the mission have made all the difference. Every step of the way, they’ve been by my side, from roasting to customer service, and beyond.
Together, all these people—farmers, mentors, teammates, and supporters—have helped shape the success of Memoirs Coffee Roasters. I’m grateful for every single one of them, and I couldn’t have done it without their encouragement and belief in what we’re building.
