Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Stewart.
Hi Taylor, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hey! I’m Taylor, I own Remedy Lash Co (right here in Brentwood!!). I am a lash educator and artist of over 10 years, and I’ve been in love with the beauty industry for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a small town in Alaska, and moved to Tennessee in 2014. After a brief period experimenting with being a hairstylist, I realized that lashes were my true passion. I worked alone in a salon suite from 2016 until I started Remedy as we know her today in 2018, at the dreamy age of 22. I wanted to create a salon environment that was pleasant and empowering to work in, as well as relaxing and luxurious to receive services in. Remedy is a non-tipping, lash focused salon that offers lash + brow services, facials, spray tans, and sugar hair removal. I am honored to work with a wonderful team of passionate young ladies that show up and show out every single day. We’ve had a lot to celebrate as we’ve grown from a one woman show to a full blown lashing operation, including being voted Best Lash Salon in the Nashville Scene three times, and placing and winning multiple categories in online and in person lash competitions. Even after all this time, I still feel a little stab of joy every time I get a notification that a new client booked online, and an “I love my lashes” text can still make my day; I am so grateful for this job, the clients, the artists, and the friends I’ve made in the last decade!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha. Hahahha. The road was like an unpaved bush trail in the backwoods of Alaska on some days, some days it was an interstate in the middle of the night with no other cars, and it’s been every variation in between. A lot of people assume that one of the biggest challenges of this job is that: “it’s so many girls!!” “you work with all girls!” “girls are so dramatic”, I’ve heard every variation of that, so I would like to start by saying that is not the case. It is a great honor and privilege to have worked with the dozens of artists and hundreds of clients I have known over the years, and watching them grow and shine and be themselves is truly the best. The hard parts are learning how to have employees at 22, or figuring out how to have a personal life when your business needs all you’ve got, or learning how to give all of that and accept that you can’t win every single heart. The greatest struggles I have had have all been related to the personal journey of growing up and learning who I am while balancing a business that requires a lot of physical presence and emotional energy. Some of the shiniest moments of my life have been pulling up to the salon at sunrise and thinking “I made this”, and some of the hardest have been calling my husband crying because it feels too hard – it’s always a journey.
We’ve been impressed with Remedy Lash Co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Remedy Lash Co is Nashville’s first non-tipping, lash focused salon. We offer lash extensions, lash lifts, brow styling, spa facials, sugar hair removal, and spray tans. I have made it my mission to find the best techniques, products, and trainings on the market and bring them to the salon. I believe in doing everything with our whole hearts and our best efforts, or not doing them at all.
Transitioning to non-tipping is one of my favorite business decisions I’ve made; I love the way it improves the interpersonal relationships with clients, as well as the financial independence it offers our team members. It takes a very “gray area” portion of many salon pay and pricing structures completely out of the equation.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I have worked to create an intentionally joyful life for myself, and I am deeply grateful for it. I love my cats, my Pilates practice, my espresso machine, and I’m pretty obsessed with my husband. Of course, I adore a good lash lift and the moment a client realizes we understood the assignment. I love when one of my employees tells me they’re buying a house, or opening an investment account, or going on an incredible trip. I love the little happy moments that add up to a great life.
