Inspiring Conversations with Terrance Simpson of The PSV Store

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrance Simpson.

Hi Terrance, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Terrance Simpson. An East Nashville native. “PSV” originated from an affirmation I came up with during a confusing time in my life. “Plus Sign Vibez” is what I would tell myself. This was in 2015. Four years reinserted after paying my debts to society while still on parole, I was lost. A Convicted felon, working what I thought was a dead-in job. Which resulted in becoming the biggest lesson to date. Having no idea that I would later implement what I learned from working in corporate America as tools to build “The PSV Store.”

All while making a lane for myself musically, I wanted to speak to at-risk youth from my perspective. Speaking engagements at churches, to high schools, the Juvenile Detention Center, and a host of other places. Performing at SXSW, Atl, Ohio, and different venues throughout Nashville, it was time to create something that was parallel to the message I wanted to convey.

PSV became the perfect name for the brand. Seven years later, we have “The PSV Store,” where Peers Support Victories. A cashless, Pop up boutique located in the Germantown area of North Nashville.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not been the smoothest road. Honestly, it still gets bumpy at times. That’s life though, right? We adjust accordingly and continue to smooth things out as they come.

The biggest struggle was battling myself. I always had the desire to do something that would fill my spirit and inspire the community. I had to get out of my own head and way in order to gift it to the world because it was never for me to keep for myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We give small businesses the opportunity to rent wall shelf space monthly for a flat fee. Their business keeps 100% profit from the products that they sell at the 5-10 events that we have monthly that are hosted by the other small business inside of the store. We are a cashless boutique so all purchases are made via whatever pay options the business chooses to post on shelf. Each “wall vendor” also gets to host their own 4-hour event within their monthly contractual agreement.

We also give small businesses the opportunity to get the PSV experience by partnering for one-day events that we have inside and outside of the store monthly. Poetry night, Art crawls, Sip & Paint, Karaoke night, and a host of other events that take place frequently at The PSV Store. We offer daily coworking space, private event rentals, and much more.

What sets us apart is that we are building a community for entrepreneurs, creatives, artists. A space that provided them the freedom to express themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve built a community organically from the ground up. We’re setting a foundation for the dreamers after us to continue to push the envelope in New Nashville. I want everyone to know that “The PSV Store” is true to its meaning. It’s honestly where “Peers Support Victories” and give “Plus Sign Vibez” to one another. #PSV

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Yes, I have advice. Ask questions. A lot of them. Ask a lot of people. Then you should do the research for yourself. I started out with practically a dollar and a dream. No idea of what the industry I indulged in would entail and some retail knowledge. I wish I would’ve known about all of the funding opportunities that are available for small businesses if you structure your business correctly.
