We’re looking forward to introducing you to Janiro Hawkins II. Check out our conversation below.
Janiro, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I’ve been finding a lot of joy in attending live events. Being in the room for concerts, performances, and djing at various venues as it’s very inspiring to experience creativity and shared moments in real time. It’s a great way for me to stay inspired.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am one of the Founders of the Southern Entertainment Awards (SEAs), a nationally recognized platform dedicated to highlighting and honoring talent throughout the South. With more than two decades of experience in the music and entertainment industry, I’ve been instrumental in building opportunities for independent artists, DJs, and industry professionals. In addition to my work with the SEAs, I also serve as Music Supervisor for Onyx Theory Arts, where I oversees the creative integration of music in film, television, and multimedia projects. I’d like to think that my work reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing culture, amplifying voices, and creating impactful connections through music and entertainment.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I couldn’t….fear takes so much away from us (regardless of age) I do not allow fear to tell me what I can and cannot do. What I do know and believe is that if God places an assignment or vision in my mind, then it IS possible.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Several, in what we do with the Southern Entertainment Awards, there’s been times that I have personally felt that what we do is under-appreciated. Knowing that we’re having a positive impact on the lives of many continues to keep the fire inside burning to press forward.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to the belief that access, opportunity, and support can change lives. No matter how long it takes, I’m dedicated to helping as many people as possible—especially through music, culture, and community-driven work—by creating platforms that uplift voices, open doors, and leave a lasting impact.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
It’s probably more about what I would START doing immediately! I think that I would start incorporating more of the youth in to what it is that I/we do in some capacity.
