jen goodall on Life, Lessons & Legacy

jen goodall shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

jen, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
For me, its impostor syndrome is that quiet, nagging belief that you’re not really qualified or deserving of your success—even when you’ve proven your abilities. I think so many people struggle with it silently, especially women and creatives, and it can feel profoundly isolating despite being far more common than most of us realize.

Another big one is constant comparison. With social media in our faces every day, it’s almost impossible not to measure ourselves against the highlight reels of others, whether it’s about careers, bodies, parenting, or lifestyle. Even when we know it’s curated, it still gets into our heads.

And then there’s the broader, darker side of social media: the unrealistic standards that creep in, no matter your age. Whether you’re a teen, a new mom, or in midlife, there’s always this pressure to look a certain way, live a certain way, and have it all figured out. It’s exhausting, and I’d love to throw my phone in the trash and have a landline for emergencies.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re Jen and Adriel, co-founders of Clary Collection—an organic skincare line born out of friendship, motherhood, and a shared commitment to clean, effective ingredients. We started Clary when we were both pregnant and couldn’t find products that were truly non-toxic, plant-based, and safe for everyday use. So we began handcrafting our own using slow-infused herbal oils, a method rooted in traditional healing practices from our kitchens in 2015.

What makes Clary special is that every product we make is free from synthetics, fillers, and toxins. We formulate for all ages and skin types, especially for those dealing with sensitivity, autoimmune flare-ups, or who just want to avoid harmful ingredients altogether.

We grow all the plants that go directly into your skincare, and we work with local beekeepers who produce the wildflower wax used in our best-selling Avocado and Olive Balms. Our goal has always been to offer skincare that’s as safe as it is effective, and we’re proud to keep growing while staying rooted in those values.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was 20, I volunteered in Cambodia with a non-profit called Small Steps Project. We delivered aid to children living and working on trash sites—an experience that completely shifted how I see the world. It gave me a perspective that’s impossible to gain without stepping into a life so different from your own. Seeing their strength and joy in the face of such hardship was incredibly humbling and left a lasting impact on how I move through the world.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the defining wounds of my life was going through a divorce. At the time, I couldn’t imagine life feeling whole or happy again. It was painful, disorienting, and forced me to reimagine everything I thought my future would look like.

But over time, I did heal. I found strength in letting go of what I thought “should” be, and slowly built a life rooted in peace, authenticity, and love. Being remarried and truly content in this new chapter has shown me that healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about making space for something new. I was proven wrong in the best way.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My business partner, Adriel Deane. She’s been my sounding board, sister, birthing partner, and an unshakable pillar of strength behind both me and Clary. Her ideas, perspective, and steady intuition have shaped so much of what we’ve built together. I truly rely on her insight more than anyone’s.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. Hitting 40 this year, I’ve let go of the need for validation. I know when I’m giving something my all—and that’s enough. I no longer seek praise to feel proud of the work I pour myself into.
