Kendall Duffie on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Kendall Duffie shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Kendall, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently I started offering free swimming and water safety lessons to any and everyone in the Nashville community. As a PADI certified Divemaster and Rescue diver it has brought me so much joy seeing people become empowered and overcoming their fear of the water, plus knowing I’m helping them with an important life saving skill.
Also I published my first book this year entitled “The 75/25 Rule: A Divemaster’s guide to tapping into the greater percentage of what life has to offer!”
It’s available now on Amazon!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kendall Duffie, founder and CEO of Deep Sea Vegan and VP of D3 Entertainment Group.
Deep Sea Vegan is a family owned and nautically themed vegan eatery currently operating as a food truck with a brick and mortar coming soon. Alongside my twin brother Kelvis and sister Michelle we have built a brand that has become the talk
of the town amongst Nashville foodies.

D3 Entertainment is a family owned marketing and promotions company headed by our CEO and my sister Michelle and twin brother and president Kelvis.
We are currently marketing a couple of major film projects including “Ruth and Boaz” produced by DeVon Franklin and Tyler Perry, steaming exclusively on Netflix Sept 26th and “Sarah’s Oil” based on a true story and in theatres nationwide Nov 7th via Amazon/MGM.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memories of feeling powerful started as child when we were homeless and despite our situation, hearing my mother speak life and abundance to us.
That measure of faith ignited something in me that has grown over time and can never be taken from me.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I remember about 2 years into Deep Sea Vegan, I was driving to the food hall where we had our weekly pop ups. On the way in 2 of our 4 employees called out and then I had a flat tire about a mile from
the building. I had so much frustration from what was happening at that very moment, plus the time and resources I had been putting into the business and I was literally about to call off the pop up and hang it all up. I called a friend of mine that spoke a few
words of encouragement to me and said a prayer and I pushed on. That was one moment in time that I had to make a hard decision to keep going or give up and I kept going.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I’ve always believed that you have to be true to yourself before you can be true to anyone else. And because of that I strive to always be the same person to everyone that I am to myself.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m scuba diving in the ocean.
As a true dive enthusiast, ocean advocate and divemaster, being in the ocean is something that brings me so much peace, tranquility and joy. It’s something I want to share with everyone I can. Scuba diving and being in the ocean are truly transformative experiences.
