We recently had the chance to connect with Lauren Smithson and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Lauren, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
I’m learning the most from my four year old son. Watching how he views the world has been eye opening. It helps me to slow down and take a step back when I need to.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lauren Smithson and I am the owner/curator/treasure hunter behind Anthology of the Unique, a vintage, antique, and unique booth inside the Franklin Antique Mall. I think something that makes my brand special, is that I want my space to be an experience. I want someone to walk in and not be able to see everything the first time, unless they are really looking. I think it opens up that child-like wonder part of us that many people have lost becoming an adult.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe that communication and listening are the most important things in human relationships. We hold all the power in our lives through simple communication. Just talking and listening to your people. Making yourself heard, hearing them. Being willing and open to listen and talk is the ultimate form of intimacy in my opinion and truly does hold the power to make or break bonds.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh all the time. Every day. With big things and small things. I think that is the human experience though! Whether it is internal or external pressures, we put ourselves through a lot of stress. Sometimes we just need to give ourselves grace to figure our stuff out before we give up completely.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Kindness. I wouldn’t say it is a cultural value, more of a human value. Kindness is so important to me. In everything I do, I try to add a little kindness. We have so much hate and suffering in our world. Everyone could use a little kindness shown to them and radiate a little kindness of their own into the world. I wish that people understood that just a tiny bit goes such a long way.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am in my own space I have created. I am alone, enjoying my time to myself, knowing that all the people I love are safe. This gives me time to decompress and all the noise of the world is quiet.
