Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Bernice Marsala

Bernice Marsala shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Bernice, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I usually just sit with my coffee, check messages on my phone, and try to wake up while the kids play. Sometimes I have to chase the baby around, but once I feel awake I get them and myself dressed for the day. Not too exciting!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an independent singer/songwriter based in Nashville, TN. I specialize in several genres; most notably Folk, Americana, Rock, Pop, and Alternative. I’ve been fortunate to receive various awards and nominations over the years, including – most recently – an award for Gold Female Album of the Year for my album, “Burgundy,” at the 2024 ISSA Awards, Folk/Americana/Roots/Bluegrass Songwriter of the Year at the 2025 Infinity Music & Film Awards, and Best Female Artist of 2025 from Indie Boulevard Magazine. My song, “Architecture,” also earned a spot on the Grammy entry ballot in two categories.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I think part of the reason I feel so called to do music is because that’s always who I was, and that hasn’t changed. I can’t remember a time when that wasn’t who I was. I’ve had many interests and done many different things, but music has always been consistently with me.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I think the minute I started writing about it, I realized that it was a therapeutic practice. Once I used whatever I was feeling to create something, I felt less affected by it because now I had this wonderful song (or songs) that I was really proud of. It’s like a form of magic – you channel those feelings into something beautiful and then you’re sort of able to shelve it.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, but it’s only a small piece. I’m a pretty private person, but in order to market yourself in this industry you have to put yourself out there a lot more than I would prefer to, especially when it comes to social media. So I do what I can, and I do go outside of my comfort zone sometimes, but I still keep to myself quite a bit.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Whenever I’m working on something music-related, even if it’s just boring administrative stuff. Something about it just melts all the stress away.
