Brittany English-Spencer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Brittany, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
K-Pop!
I started listening to K-Pop a few years ago now, but this year, I finally got the opportunity to see two of my favorite groups.
Traveling, seeing other fans, and making costumes for one of the shows gave me a huge spark of inspiration. Being at a concert is such a cool feeling, and it has been such a great summer enjoying music and fandom.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m your friendly neighborhood costumer and makeup artist!
My brand is Angry Sheep!
Why Angry Sheep? Because I’m an Aries, and we’re always spicy!
I currently do work for haunted houses, bands, and individuals. I started my costuming journey in 2012 with cosplay, and I’ve come a long way since then. My costumes have been all over the country, and even on the travel channel. It really cool to see how far things go, and where they end up. Costuming is such an adventure, and takes a lot of different skills. Makeup is a lot of fun too, but requires an entirely different skill set.
Where they come together is my main focus is to make sure that both are safe, comfortable, and clean.
I work with a lot of actors who spend hours in their costumes, and it is important to make sure they are able to fully perform the entire time.
I care so much about every person that steps into my art, and I want to make sure they are as taken care of as possible.
My son, who is seven currently, even enjoys dressing up now. We made him a giant Minecraft Creeper to compete in a costume contest this past spring. It’s so cool to pass on my passion to the next generation. I love that dude so much.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed that I could do any and everything all at once! Haha
Now I know that I can do anything, but not all at the same time. I focus a lot on taking care of myself now more than ever before. Your health is precious, and you deserve rest.
I still want to do everything all the time though, so I try to schedule out my creative outlets. Sometimes I’ll combine them.
I will write, edit content, and do small crafts in between matches on my favorite video games.
That can be too much sometimes though, and I have to slow down and remind myself to give my brain more down time.
Take it day by day, and do what you can with each day.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You have no idea how much you will go though. You will get through it.
It will be really hard, but your life is so beautiful now.
Don’t give up.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you have to make a lot of money to get started.
Absolutely not.
You can make a costume out of free cardboard, newspaper, clothing that friends are cleaning out, and all kinds of other things.
If you can dream it, you can do it.
It might not be right now, it might not be next week, but eventually, you will find a way.
But, you have to build that way and work hard for it everyday.
Keep an eye on your local buy/sell/trade groups and thrift shops. You can find a lot of really cool pieces and recycle stuff too! I love bringing new life into old things and saving them from the landfills.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I have, and that’s ok!
We go through different seasons in life, and sometimes, things we wanted for years aren’t what make us happy when we finally get there.
It’s ok to change your mind. It’s ok to decide you want to do something completely new!
I’ve gone back and forth on decisions a lot, but once I make a choice, I feel confident in it.
I think that’s truly the hallmark of being an artist though. You are never truly satisfied. You’ll always push yourself to create more.
