Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Caroline Dabney Bilden

We recently had the chance to connect with Caroline Dabney Bilden and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Caroline, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Right now, my first 90 minutes of the day tend to be the busiest! I usually start my morning by snuggling with our dog for five minutes too long after snoozing my alarm. I am currently training for a marathon, so a long run or a good stretch tend to be the next thing I do. After checking social media and chugging water thanks to this heat, I hop in the shower before work. I look forward to my iced coffee with Chobani creamer every morning, so I make sure to have that prepped before opening my laptop for the day!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the Franchise Development Manager at The Scout Guide and the founder of Organized By Caroline Dabney. I essentially talk to people all day long about building their dream career! In my extra time, I also sell embroidered napkins and hand towels, and occasionally use my professional organizing muscle to help women around Nashville!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
This is such a great question. My dad always recounts the story of when I was 3 years old and some older boys were apparently making fun of my baby sister for wearing diapers (hello she was 11 months old…). Apparently, all twenty something pounds of me (is that how much you weigh at 3?) ran up to them and told them off. They were so taken aback that they immediately apologised and left the playground. My dad was so proud. I’d like to think this was the inception point for my confidence around people who might appear more important (or simply older and taller) than me at first glance.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be to calm down. I was so type A, that I believe I missed out on some great moments all because I was so worried about them being perfect. It’s okay to live in the moment and not have everything planned out. Frankly, those moments are always better anyway.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I firmly believe that a victim mentality gets you nowhere.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people talk about how I made them feel. I pride myself in making everyone around me feel included and excited to be a part of the conversation. I really hope that follows me, even after I am gone.
