Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Debbie Flood

We recently had the chance to connect with Debbie Flood and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Debbie, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently, the song I worked on with Karen Waldrup was featured on Billboard’s Top 7 Hot Country Releases. It’s called “Blue Cowboy Boots” and I am so grateful to have played the drums on this really fun song! I never in a million years thought that a song that I created the drum part would be featured anywhere let alone Billboard! I’m truly overwhelmed and excited!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Debbie Flood aka DFloodDrums! I have been playing drums since I was 13 years old when I fell in love with playing the drums! Being a female drummer has had its ups and downs but I love the drums and can’t machine playing mother instrument! I have performed other over 40 different bands and many styles of music as well as recorded with a multitude of artists/ bands. I enjoy playing live and also creating in the studio! Right now I am plying with several artists including Karen Waldrup, Bailey Cole, Fimone, and Zoe Cummins.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say my relationship with 2 people my mother and my wife. My Mother gave me permission to play drums at a time when not many women were. She instilled in me that being a woman would never hold me back and that I could do / be anything I wanted to be as long as I worked hard and stuck with it.
My wife because she has always supported every step I have made towards achieving my dreams. She has seen me at my worst and picked me back up. I am forever grateful to have such an amazing person to stand by me and always have my back.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Unequivocally, I would say SELF-DOUBT!
I toured in my 20s and when the tour ended I was devastated so much so that I didn’t perform for many years after that. I just thought I was not good enough but I kept on working . When I decided to move to Nashville that was again a time of thinking “what am I doing here”, these drummers are insane. I was able to find my people who believed in me and gave me chances to play and that really made all the difference in the world for me to realize, I AM good enough and hey I AM doing this thing!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you have only “made it” if you are performing in big stadiums or selling #1 songs! The music business is nuts! There are so many different levels and scenes that you can find yourself. I have always been chasing that elusive big tour or #1 song. Recently, I started looking at music differently. It is not about that, it’s about making amazing music, being creative in the studio, and bringing joy to people when I perform live whether that is to 2 people or thousands! I especially love touring because I get to meet so many different people who are there because they love music like I do and to bring them a happy moment means EVERYTHING!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace on stage. Those are the moments that are pure for me. There is no drama, no sadness, no hurt… just pure joy! Even on the worst days when I have had no sleep, had a bad day, and am totally exhausted performing music always brings me into a space of pure peace and joy! There is nothing like it and I m so grateful that I have the opportunity to make music!
