Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Don Cody

We recently had the chance to connect with Don Cody and have shared our conversation below.

Don, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now is adapting to my new home. I just moved to Nashville, TN after living my whole life in the San Francisco Bay Area. So it’s been a lot of driving around and getting used to the neighborhood. It’s kind of nice to have a clean slate all over again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I go by the name Don Cody. I’m a hip-hop artist from the San Francisco Bay Area but recently have relocated to Nashville, TN. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been in the game for 10+ years now. My sophomore album is scheduled to drop early next year. I’m pretty pumped about it. I feel like the sound is constantly evolving, we have some really fun features on there. I think the listeners are really going to dig it.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
This may sound strange but I would say myself. Just off of my past trial and errors alone. It’s been a constant occurrence for me running into the brick wall until I knock it down. But after each wall I knock down, there is always a bigger one waiting behind it. It gets exhausting but exhilarating once completed. There’s always a mountain to climb and that’s what keeps me and my team busy.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I feel like giving up all the time. I’m definitely my own worst enemy. I get in my head constantly and ask myself “why are we still doing this?” or “is it time to wrap this up?” But this journey is far bigger than a selfish decision to just stop because things get too hard. I have a family that I need to take care of. I have a team to take care of and they have their families to take care of. It’s a lot of responsibility and pressure but I have to give back to those who have believe and invested their time into my vision.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I’m not sure if there is an exact lie, but it’s full of false promises. This industry is a lot of snakes. I’ve been burnt by many “promises” or by individuals who I thought had my back. You have to be very cautious in this world. There are far more people that want to take advantage of you than those who want to help. I have an incredibly trust worthy team around me right now who are just as or more important than I am in this operation, but this has taken years to develop. Build a trustworthy team and do the work yourselves cause you don’t make many friends in this industry.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I just really strive to be as entertaining and passionate as I possibly can. I love bringing the good time. Making people smile, laugh, forget about their hardships whether its during the duration of one of my songs or performances.
