We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jess Coale. Check out our conversation below.
Jess, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I have avoided it for awhile but deep down I know I am being called to step into the spotlight. I lived in fear for the majority of my life; whether it be asking a question, speaking to a group of people, fear of rejection, being laughed at etc. I had lived most of those fears and so it perpetuated me not wanting to step up for a long time. It can be very isolating but what I have found for myself is that it is more liberating than anything. My soul had been screaming for it for a really long time. I have spoken up, and spoken out against bad things happening to people and have been left in the cold; alone, betrayed, abandoned, isolated. But deep down I knew I had done the right thing and that I was proud of myself for honoring who I am and not letting anyone get in the way of that. I have been through one hell of a fight the last decade and am now in a place where I feel I can proudly resurface and speak to those who are searching for someone they can relate to. I am working on flexing that unapologetic muscle by once again honoring who I am and not allowing the fear to consume me or stop me. Podcast is almost ready to launch, book is coming, and I am ready.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jess and I am an artist to the artists. Also known as “the rocknrollfacialist”, I provide services to touring musicians and crews in the forms of massages/facials, photography, makeup, and breathwork. I have been an Aesthetician for over 10 years and love providing the behind the scenes services for the creatives who’s music has changed my life. I am also working on a podcast that will be launching very soon called “the Soulrocker”. It will be an all ecompassing podcast on everything that has rocked my soul in the best and worst ways, seeking truth, spirituality, life’s challenges and how to work through them, mental health, and becoming as sovereign and unfuckwithable as possible in a world designed to keep you scared. I cannot wait to share it all with you!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The old Jess is currently just about done dying off. I have undergone a massive transformation over the last 5 years where if you knew me before then, you probably wouldnt recognize me now. I lived in survival mode my entire life and so the old behaviors that helped save me before, had to be acknowledged, released, and grieved over. It is a very painful process because when letting that part of you go, you also lose your identity. All I had known was my survival mechanisms, behaviors, and mindset that went with it. It was who I was for 30 years. Having to shed that skin left me feeling exposed, not knowing who I actually was, and vulnerable. Learning and remembering has been a scary, awesome, insane, fun, and wild ride and I wouldnt trade it for anything. It has brought me the love of my life, a renewed sense of self, a foundation in which to build on and a childlike outlook on how much beauty and magic is in the world. I am so thankful.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Dont listen to anyone else but your own heart. I was made fun of for everything under the sun when I was a kid. My big forehead, the music i listened to, not understanding something in school right away, asking questions and being called stupid because I was trying to learn, etc. It fueled shame, embarrassment, feeling less than, anxiety, frustration, and more. I thought something was wrong with me, that what I liked and enjoyed was wrong and that made me feel incredibly alone. I grew into a really angry teen and had a hard time expressing emotions and because I had suppressed who I really was out of fear of rejection, I lost myself. It took me a solid 20 years of struggle to finally stand up and say I am done and ready to take my life back. So to my younger self and to any young kid who feels alone and like no one really gets you; do not listen to anyone but you. Your heart knows who you are and you are all you need. Keep going, continue to love yourself as you are and stay strong. Do not let 20 years go by before you finally find that strength again. Learn from me and what I went through so you don’t have to struggle. You can do this!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Where do I even begin. The skincare industry can be really great but also has a lot of muddy water to wade through when it comes to marketing and crossing hairs with the medical industry. A lot of skincare is based off natural plants and ingredients found in the food we eat, yet nutrition isn’t really talked about and every lab created skincare company claims that their products are better. Don’t get me wrong, there can be arguments for either side, it is a tricky road to navigate but it all comes down to making sure you are going to an Esthetician who is educating and explaining how to navigate said path and not just trying to sell you a service or a product because it is “trending”. For example, people are following the “clean/natural/chemical free” trends. Ok but water is technically a chemical and poison ivy is also considered natural. So companies need to be explaining what they mean by that and not just using them as buzzwords to sell products. I also personally do not believe every single ailment should be masked with a pill or injection. There are so many Doctors out there that just write a script instead of once again asking about nutrition, lifestyle, and behaviors that may need to be adjusted in order to make a lasting change in someone’s life. So instead of helping you overcome the obstacle and teaching you how to take care of your body, they make a sale and keep you on it forever. I could go on about this for days. Instant gratification has gone too far and the natural/holisitic ways of taking care of our bodies has been pushed to the side. Learning how to take care of ourselves in a healthy way is where the balance will come back into play.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
My story of resiliency. Of leading with your heart always, but also protecting your peace. I hope it encourages people to keep going, don’t take life too seriously and to enjoy every moment of your life. The good times are great and the hard times are there to teach you something so you can enjoy the next good time. It’s a beautiful life that is not to be taken for granted so dont give up.
