Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kendra Story of Ashland City, TN

Kendra Story shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kendra, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What battle are you avoiding?
I choose to avoid anyone who disturbs my peace. Life is precious and very, very short. I’d much rather put my time and energy into those who lift me up, not tear me down.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a sound engineer, producer, and songwriter on the outskirts of Nashville. I am very focused on running my business from home, working with artists remotely, collaborations, and so on. Recently, I met an artist who traveled across the U.S. from California to work in person after another producer sent her my contact information. Long story short, we recorded several songs, including one a friend and I wrote together.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Grudges. If you’re holding a grudge against someone, forgive them. It doesn’t mean you have to keep that person in your life, but refusing to forgive only hurts you in the long run. It is necessary in order to heal.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
If I never went through any kind of suffering, I would never appreciate what I have right now. Let’s be honest, humans are selfish. I am selfish. We live in a time where everything is at our fingertips. Emails, text messages, phone calls, you name it. We want and expect things to happen when we want them to, and that simply isn’t how life works. Having to wait, to suffer through hardship, going through a rough patch, it’s a learning experience. We wouldn’t appreciate the things waiting on the other side if we got what we wanted right away. As much as it sucks, it is a blessing. Learn to appreciate it, because if you don’t you’ll never truly be happy with anything in your life.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes- at least, I’d like to think so. I am not perfect by no means. I make mistakes just like everyone else on this planet. It’s easy to hide things from other people, and that is very true with social media. But everybody has their skeletons in the closet, and even if nobody knows about them, you can’t hide them from God. I try to be the person God wants me to be, because at the end of the day, it’s between me and God and I know He’s watching.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
When people tell you it’s the little things in life, believe them- because it’s true. Most of our society today, especially my generation, they do not realize how much they take for granted. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone. It’s so important to appreciate the little things. If you have family and friends you love, tell them. Don’t put off doing stuff you want and need to do. Time goes by a lot faster than we think.
