Mikey Denton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mikey, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What battle are you avoiding?
Imposter syndrome
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mikey Denton, and I’ve been working behind the chair as a hairdresser and short hair specialist for over 13 years. I’m based in Nashville, where I cut hair full-time while also traveling across the country teaching haircutting classes to salons, barbershops, and beauty schools.
What makes me different is that I’m not an influencer teaching theory from the sidelines—I’m actually behind the chair every week, working with real clients and the same challenges other professionals face. That perspective shapes the way I teach: honest, practical, and built to give stylists and barbers tools they can actually use the very next day.
Right now, I’m working on a new education project that I’m really excited about. I can’t give away too much yet, but it’s designed to shake up the way professionals learn hair—taught by someone who lives it every single day, not just talks about it. The goal is to bring a fresh, authentic approach to education that feels real and relatable, not filtered or performative.
At the end of the day, my mission is simple: cut with intention, teach with honesty, and help others in the industry feel more confident and capable behind the chair.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My wife. Shes constantly pushing me, wants me to ask questions instead of ignore them, she has helped me run a business (really she ran it I was just the face), and she constantly makes me want to do better for our family. Not by force but just witnessing her drive for things makes me want to replicate it
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
That you need to fail in order to succeed. We need to learn from our past mistakes in order to move forward
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That big brands care about the professionals. A lot don’t.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
When i am with my family. As crazy as it can be they are the only people I truly want to be around all the time.
