Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Mr. Mayo

We recently had the chance to connect with Mr. Mayo and have shared our conversation below.

Mr. , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Our sound and brand as a band that is unique to us, while simultaneously paying tribute to those who came before us and have inspired our journey along the way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are an absurdly gratuitous jazz fusion group based in Nashville, TN. We all banded together with the collective vision of creating a space for all of us to operate unapologetically. Forming in 2023, we took Nashville by storm by offering something of which the world has never seen. Captivating audiences with our innovative melodies, complex rhythmic structures, mesmerizing improvisation, and LOTS of mayonnaise. Our goal is to reach as many ears as possible and share our true selves with the world.

Mr. Mayo is not just a band, rather it’s a way of being. We aim to pour as much of ourselves into this music as we can…

Not only for ourselves, but for you as the listener.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Musicians searching for an outlet to play the kind of music we want to play and be able to express ourselves to our fullest artistic potential. We all chose the life of musicians because of our love for it, it did not choose us, and we are all grateful for the gift to be able to move people with our music.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Although our music is very niche, we are grateful to have attracted an intimate audience that truly listen and appreciate all of what the band brings to the ears of their listeners.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That being a musician is easy, especially being at a high level. As the musicians that came before us did, we have all dedicated our lives to music and continue to work very hard to hone and refine our craft every day. We aim to showcase our love and dedication through our music while simultaneously inspiring other musicians and music appreciators who connect with our music.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That the gratuitous nature of our music moved and inspired them to dive deeper into the genre and strengthen their relationship with music.
