Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Taria Mills

We recently had the chance to connect with Taria Mills and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Taria, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I love spending time with my family and friends! I feel like as I get older I can appreciate spending meaningful time with the people I love most. I have really been focusing on creating life long memories in this season.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is TariaJaybre` and I am a Professional Recording Artist. I have been singing since the age of 3 and writing songs as long as I can remember. I grew up in a very musical family and its always been a part of my life. All of our family functions, birthday parties, Christmas parties, and even Sunday dinners where infused with music. My family not only shares a love for music; we all share a love for God and the church became my main stage. I am very blessed to have parents whom love music even more than myself so they have always been very supportive of my music ministry. I have been an Independent Artist for almost 10 years and aside from motherhood, this has been one of the most fulfilling ventures of my entire life. My music is ministry and I truly enjoy spreading love and positivity. I am currently touring and making appearances while working on my sophomore album. I am committed to releasing positive music that touches on my faith in God and encourages believers like myself to never give up.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I have always been told I have a unique speaking voice. Because my voice was deeper than most girls, people were always drawn in when I spoke or sang. It was like my voice was authoritative but sweet at the same time, it just commanded attention, My mother took advantage of that and would always teach me how to sing the low harmonies on songs. When the boys in our kids choir got shy or apprehensive, my mother would put me in charge of carrying the tenor section. I still remember how fun that was for me and how strong it made me feel. I got laughed at many times, but I never let it stop me. I literally thought I had a super power.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I have always had the desire to sing professionally but listening to the opinions of others almost made me give up many times. I think my lack of confidence combined with life struggles, it just seems like giving up was the only option. I am glad to say that I have overcome those feelings and negative comments, and now the only approval is seek is from God.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The Music industry itself is made up of many talented individuals. On the consumer/listener side, there is a big misconception that Independent artists/musicians are not important to the industry. The thing that most of the general public don’t understand is that being independent is often times more beneficial for creatives. We may not get the exposure we deserve but our community is strong in numbers and even stronger in relationship. We support each other, encourage one another, and are literally creating movements and experiences that are authentic.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I had 10 years left, I would stop spending extra money on things like clothes, shoes, accessories, beauty products, etc. I hate to admit it but I am a bit of a shopaholic. I would literally spend all my free time writing and creating music to leave behind a great legacy. I would also stop caring about what others think and just create and release whatever feels good.
