Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Taylor
Hi Alexis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in the small town of Huntsville, Ontario, Canada but currently live in Nashville, Tennessee. Music has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. Both of my parents have always been deeply involved in the music industry, so I feel like it was an easy choice to follow in their footsteps! When I was 12, I wrote my first song and from that moment on, I was hooked. It wasn’t until my best friend and I visited Nashville for the very first time that I really fell in love with with Music City. During that visit, I made the decision that I would do whatever it took to move to Nashville. Since taking that leap, I have had the incredible opportunity to tour internationally, and have released 16 singles along with an EP Album. It has been a crazy ride but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road, that’s for sure—pursuing a career in music rarely is. I think one of the biggest challenges for me has been navigating the uncertainty and instability that often comes with the music industry. There have been plenty of times when gigs were sparse, especially during COVID, and I had to find other ways to support myself while staying focused on my music.
Another struggle that I deal with on a daily basis is managing self-doubt and rejection. Whether it’s facing criticism or competing in a super saturated market like Nashville, it can be tough to stay motivated. There are weeks, sometimes months where it feels like no matter how much effort I put into my music, I’m not seeing the progress I would like. Whether it’s struggling to see growth on streaming platforms or hearing more “no’s” than “yes’s” from radio programmers, the setbacks can feel relentless.
On top of that, it can be especially discouraging to see other artists or songwriters doing well when you feel like you’re stuck. Social media only amplifies the comparison game, and I think it’s tough to remind yourself that you can’t compare yourself to someone elses highlight reels. However, despite the challenges, every setback has taught me resilience. Each obstacle has pushed me to grow, not just as an artist, but also as a person. It’s a reminder to focus on my own journey, and celebrate even the smallest victories along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
First and foremost, I am a songwriter, crafting stories and emotions into songs is at the heart of who I am. Singing comes second, but it feels like a natural extension of my songwriting rather than the other way around. One of my most recent and proudest accomplishments is my latest single, “Seeing Ghosts.”
This song represents so much more than just a track. It’s a testament to my growth as an artist and my perseverance in the face of challenges. The journey to take the song from a demo, and turn it into what you hear today was anything but easy. From dealing with production setbacks to pushing myself vocally, “Seeing Ghosts” was a song that required me to trust my instincts (and my producer) and stay true to my vision.
What sets me apart from other singer/songwriters is my unwavering authenticity in my music. With “Seeing Ghosts,” I drew deeply from personal experiences to craft a story that is raw, relatable, and real. I have always believed music should be more than just a catchy tune. it should tell a story and connect with people on a deeper level. Growing up listening to country music, I fell in love with songs that felt like honest, heartfelt stories, and I strive to bring that same storytelling aspect into my songs. It’s all about creating something that not only tells a story but also helps others feel seen and understood. That’s what I’m most proud of and what I strive for in every song I write.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people who know me or my work might not realize is that I’m actually a bit of a perfectionist—sometimes to a fault. While my music and brand might come across as laid-back or effortless, behind the scenes, I tend to overanalyze every detail, from the lyrics in my songs to the production process and even the visuals that accompany my music. It’s definitely a blessing and a curse because while it pushes me to create work I’m truly proud of, it also means I can be my own toughest critic. But at the end of the day, that drive for excellence is what allows me to always give my very best to my audience.
