Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Brewer.
Hi Anthony, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey in the coffee industry started when I was around 23 or 24 years old. I worked at a local shop in Redding, CA while attending a ministry school in 2016. It was super fun, and I was slowly starting to see how the coffee community worked and operated – it was very fresh and exciting for me! I was also getting (slightly) geekier about the coffee world at the time, but I was just trying to stay present and enjoy something new, all the while not trying to think too much about what career paths were available in that industry.
Looking back, I wouldn’t have called coffee a true passion or “career” pursuit until I worked at a shop in Orange County, CA. This truly set me on the path towards discovering what life would be like if I chose to just focus on the coffee industry itself. Eventually, I worked my way through all kinds of different “hats,” or positions in the industry (besides roasting), and also worked at another shop in Oklahoma a few different times in life. Working at the shop in Oklahoma exposed me to the mobile side of coffee, and opened me up to all kinds of possibilities – eventually planting the seeds for Sine Wave Coffee to be born!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that the road hasn’t been particularly smooth at times, but overall, I do genuinely feel that Sine Wave is what I’m supposed to be doing and living out, and I’m very happy to be where I’m at! It is so fun, and it really is a satisfying feeling to be your own boss. However, that is where the other side of the coin comes into play – you are ultimately responsible for your own growth, and you are also responsible for everything in the business (at least at first).
The biggest hurdles were probably just learning the “behind the scenes” reality of permits, licensing, and all of the legal side of the business. I’d say the other piece that can be tough is marketing, getting your branding down to your liking, and also just being consistent with getting the word out. I’ve learned a ton about these sides of this business but always finding room to grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My name is Anthony Brewer, and I am the owner/operator of Sine Wave Coffee. It is an (espresso-based) mobile coffee cart that specializes in serving up a full coffee bar menu at private events, pop-ups, and businesses.
I would say one thing that people know me for, and also sets me apart from the others, are my homemade syrups.
The Bourbon Vanilla syrup is a highly esteemed, and flagship syrup that people love, as well as a fun rotation of syrups to match the season and vibe.
Another thing that sets Sine Wave apart is the community that it brings. Coffee is such a social industry, and it’s been so cool to connect with others, and see what doors have opened up through just being people-focused!
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
This is a good question. It is a vulnerable thing to start your own business, and I would consider it a risk, yes.
However, I was covered by my family/friends in a way that was full of peace and offered a ton of support. I knew I had a lot of learning ahead, but I was also confident because I felt the Lord’s leading on starting my business.
