Today we’d like to introduce you to April Kry.
Hi April, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started out singing in church with my dad who was the worship leader there. I always knew I wanted to be involved with music but it was around 12 or 13 that I really started to take it seriously as a career. I took every local show opportunity that I could while I was in school to build up my sage presence. After high school, I started to learn guitar and write. I found my way to Nashville and fell in love with the songwriting community here. A few years after I moved to Nashville, I signed to an independent record label in town and got to release a bunch of music, played CMA Fest, the iHeart Summit, and collaborated with some amazing artists! After four years of being on that label, a lot of ups and downs of trying to find myself as an artist, my contract expired and I am now completely independent. Since then, I have toured overseas, and released a project that has garnered over 4 million streams on Spotify-which I am really proud of! I am currently working on a full-length album and just gave birth to my first baby boy this past March. I am looking forward to playing live shows again when things get back to normal!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think any artist that has been in the music business long enough would ever say that it’s a “smooth road”. There are plenty of struggles and hurdles that I’ve been through along the way that have really molded me into the artist that I am today. I’ve struggled with trying to fit into a mold of what people expected me to be. I eventually surrendered to the fact that there will always be criticism no matter what, so I might as well just be who I am and make the music I want to make despite genre or gender limitations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d like to say that I’m known for breaking down genre barriers and empowering women with my music. I love mixing genres. My sister is a songwriter in the pop/RnB world and I started out in country. We both have such different influences and you can hear them in our writing styles. I am all about being open and honest with my listeners and fans. I talk about things that we can all hopefully relate to. Self-worth, falling in and out of love, addiction, empowerment. These are subjects I feel very strongly about and you can hear a lot of them in my music – definitely the new music I’ve been working on!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I feel like the definition of success is different for everyone. For me, it’s being able to influence people in a positive way with my music. It’s taking risks and not being afraid of the outcome because you are so confident in your artistry and yourself that it doesn’t matter.
