Life & Work with Astha Sinha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Astha Sinha. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Yustha Yoga is South Asian-inspired athleisure founded by two sisters, Ayushi and Astha. It started with a conversation in our living room about the misappropriation of Indian culture and designs.

We have the roots in our closet from our mom’s saree and our grandparent’s stories, so we wanted to bring light to that and thought of a bunch of different ideas. Fast forward to today: we are committed to bringing the fabrics and patterns that women in our family have worn for generations by designing South Asian-inspired athleisure.

I’m currently a student at Vanderbilt University studying Computer Science and Applied Math. I’m interning at Microsoft as a Technical Program Manager for XBox Emerging Technologies this summer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. Being a small business is very difficult because you rarely get paid for your time.

What I mean by that is a lot of our efforts go into customer acquisition, however, because we are a small business, our customer service and tailored designs are often gone to waste. Many times people have taken the design we’ve created for them or ghosted us after we sent them a sample!

Therefore, it’s important to remember our mission when creating and operating for Yustha. It keeps us grounded and focused on our purpose — because a lot of the roadblocks can be quite discouraging.
