Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Thayer.
Hi Bailey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Big Sports Girl was born from a desire to turn an insult into empowerment. Once a playful jab meant to undermine women’s confidence in sports, “Big Sports Girl” now embodies a vibrant community of women who love sports, socializing, and celebrating their competitive spirit–whether that means playing the game or simply cheering from the sidelines.
Created by me 🙂 a former athlete turned event planner, Big Sports Girl hosts unforgettable events during every sporting seasons, uniting women through tailgates, fitness classes, and pop-up gatherings. It’s about lifting each other up, building lasting friendships, and creating memories that extend beyond the field.
With a portion of merchandise sales donated to their favorite cause, Play Like A Girl– a nonprofit organization that prepares girls for careers in STEM by connecting sport, mentorship, and confidence-building experiences.
Big Sports Girl is more than a brand; it’s a movement
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Definitely not! Haha, but I don’t think building something meaningful ever is. One of the biggest struggles has been balancing the many hats that come with being a founder while also maintaining a full-time career. There have been moments of self-doubt, burnout, financial risk, and figuring things out without a blueprint.
Growing a women-led brand in the sports space also comes with challenges. You’re building community, creating content, designing products, planning events, and trying to scale, all at once. But every challenge has reinforced why Big Sports Girl exists in the first place: to create a space where women feel seen, connected, and celebrated in sports and girlhood.
The road hasn’t been smooth, but the passion behind the mission has made every obstacle worth navigating.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the founder of Big Sports Girl – a women-led brand and community built to celebrate the intersection of sports, girlhood, and connection. Through merchandise, events, content, and community initiatives, my mission is to create spaces where women can unapologetically love sports, build friendships, and feel represented.
Professionally, I come from an events and hospitality background, so community building, experience creation, and relationship development are really at the heart of what I do. I specialize in creating experiences that bring people together whether that’s through branded events, partnerships, storytelling, or building meaningful communities around shared passions.
What I’m most proud of is that Big Sports Girl has grown organically into something much bigger than merchandise. It has become a community. Seeing women show up to events alone and leave with friendships, hearing stories of people feeling seen in sports culture, and being able to give back to girls in sports through partnerships and initiatives. Those moments mean the most to me.
What sets me apart is the authenticity behind the brand. Big Sports Girl was created from lived experience. As a former athlete, sports fan, event professional, and woman navigating adulthood and community-building. I’m not just building a business; I’m building the kind of space I wish existed more when I was growing up and even now as an adult woman. I believe sports can be a powerful vehicle for confidence, belonging, and connection, and everything I create reflects that mission.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is bringing people together, creating meaningful experiences, and building community, whether that’s through work, passion projects, or simply hosting a great gathering. I genuinely love throwing a good party; hosting comes naturally to me, and it’s even more fulfilling when it’s connected to a good cause.T
Outside of that, some of my happiest moments are much simpler: golfing, traveling, playing with my golden retriever, Stella! & ending the day with a nice glass of wine and a sunset.
At the core of it all, I’m happiest when life feels connected, joyful, and shared a mix of purpose, people, and appreciating the little moments along the way.
